First off - sorry to dig up an old thread. But I just realized I'm seeing this issue. On one hand I'm a bit happy to see other people see this issue, on the other, I'm sad that there hasn't been a absolute fix for this (by Mfg'r or owners).
Anyway, I only encounter this on first-morning starts. As it's cold here currently (temperatures dipping to 40's at night), I don't know if it's a cold weather thing or a "sitting overnight" thing. But I tend not to think it's the latter as it doesn't do it when I get off work (~8hr sit before startup)

You need to check you owner's manual. I believe in 2000, they do this until they warm up to protect the protect the transmission. You may also notice that it will not go into overdrive at first. This should be outline in you OM somewhere, perhaps in the "Starting and Driving" section.
this is interesting - I'm no tranmission technician, but I would have never though that allowing the transmission to "flare" or "surge" prior to shifting protects it. In my opinion, it makes it worse, doesn't it? Like I said, I'm not transmission expert, but I've had my fun with transmissions on my '91 Maxima.
I'm 4-day old new owner to my Qx4, and when I first experienced this, it sank my heart based on my experiences with my maxima.
However, like you say, it does go away after a while. Not sure if it's temperature (warmer fluids? warmer engine?) or something else that's making it go away.
Nonetheless, I'm going to go through the OM and see if I can find this.
Empty V wrote:Hey everyone I used to have what seems to be the same excat problem. I took it to my Trans guy and he said it's not a transmission issue. What it ended up being is a clogged fuel filter. It's really cheap to have it changed out and from what I understand only takes about 10min. I think you're supposed to change it every 30K miles, mine was never changed. I did that and had my Mas Air Flow Sensor cleaned. This is my only guess and it work amazing for me.

Does anyone else think this makes sense? Not to say Empty-V is wrong or what not, but just trying to connect the two: Fuel filter and transmission.
mk_1970 wrote:Just got this issue fixed on my 2001 QX4. When it rained or during cold nights the transmission would flare after the first 2-3 miles or a bumpy ride. Had it checkout by the dealer... came back with no solution.
Played around under the hood and found the issue. The throttle position sensor is the culprit. It had issue with having a clean connection.
When the engine heats up the connector gets loose and causes transmission flares. got a new throttle position sensor and have not had the issue anymore.
U can also try a connection gel, which is cheaper, and hold the connection well.
Took the car to the mountains and back with tow, no transmission flares.
Give it a try.MK
same thing, if this really fixes the issue - can someone elaborate as to why the TPS would affect transmission engagement into gear? Although, this may not apply to my situation, as my transmission flares when it is "cold" or has sat overnight.
bender wrote:I have a 2000 I30t (90,000 miles) with the transmission flaring between 1st and 2nd at low throttle. It only does it intermittently. Sometimes it bucks, usually just the RPMs go way up, then it decides to drop into gear. I read that there is a service bulletin that says it's the transmission selenoids. I had them changed ($700)but nothing changed. The Nissan master tech found nothing when he changed them. The next thing I read is it could be the Transmission Control Module ($400).
Anyone have an opinion or experience with this. I need some advice before dropping another $400 and hoping for the best. Thanks
I've thought about the solenoids too. althought I'm not sure if you're issue is similar to mine or not, as I only see it on my first morning startup. After what I think is the engine/drivetrain is warmed up, then it goes away. I live about 10mi from the nearest highway, so I don't know if my OD locks me out or not (based on the idea that the transmission locks out of OD until warm).
Does anyone know if the QX4 has a "self-diagnostic" mode to check for TCU "health"?
