How did your volt meter readings come out before you went out and bought the maf? If you had 1/10 the test equipment we have at our disposal perhaps you guys would understand why it is so pricey to get your car just diagnosed. Most of you own a japanese cadillac therefore the price of parts and cost to have it diagnosed properly is higher. This is due to the technoilgy used in the vehicles. For any given year it is superior to that same model yr nissan. A couple yrs down the road the nissan products get that same technoligy while the newer infinitis have new technoligy. This means the dealer has high tech diagnostic equipment that is very pricey. A consult used to diagnose your cars is near 5000 dollars. Since it is handled freguently day in and day out it sufferes wear there for needs occasional repair or replacement. That is one peice of equipment used in the shop. There are many other devices used, lab scopes, guages and meters, oscilliscopes, alignment racks [ours happens to be top of the line right now] $50k 5 gas analyzer dyno combo the list goes on. The highest payed Tech in the shop makes no more then 30% of the hourly shop rate. So if the shop is $100 an hour the highest payed tech makes about $30 an hour. Of a shop of say 10 techs there will likely be only 1 tech that makes that. Let me tell you HE is the guy you want working on your car. The rest of the ten will fall out something like this. 2 more guys MIGHT make more then 20 an hour. The rest will be below 20 and likely closer to 14 or 15 an hour. It doesnt cost you any more to request the top dog either. You will pay the same no matter who works on your car. In my shop there is currently 12 techs. I am top dog, there are 2 other master techs in my shop but they make slightly less then I do. The rest are below the mark. I dont know how other states are goverened by EPA but here it is very costly to operate this type of buisness with the waste and potential air and ground contaminants. There are licenses that cost a small fortune each year along with disposal fees of tires ,oil and coolant. The over head is hefty. The funny thing is the service dept hardly makes any of the profit the dealer makes. Its the car sales that makes the dealer the money. Think about that the next time you drop coin on a new or used car at a dealer. Where are you really getting screwed????
