During last night's softball game, trying to score from 3rd I collided with the catcher and tore my ACL in my right knee and shattered my right middle finger... Thought i just twisted it until I tried to put weight on it - It won't hold ANY weight, and hurts like HELL.

Went to urgent care last night, Doc says surgery likely on the knee and definitely on the finger.

I've already been through open-heart surgery, a tonsillectomy and a vasectomy...Anybody had their knee done?

This blows. I can't drive, can't play ball, can't spar, can't walk (without crutches), Dammit!!! :mad

DAAAAAANG!!!

Hitman is on injured reserve now!

My smashed middle finger is finally healing... but I've got a bump I didn't have before.... and a new scar to add to the collection.

Than knee is gonna be a pain... I've had several friends with ACL issues... and the recovery period is slow and painful. So.. hey, best of luck... sorry to hear about it bro.

Getting old sucks, I hope you heal quickly.

P.S. call for backup if you need help with tino's mom. Smitty is ready, willing, and able.

Man that sucks. Get better fast. Sucks bad when your legs start getting messed up. Have a friend that every month or so he breaks, sprains, or gets something wrong with his ankle's.

Take it easy and dont try to rush it. That only makes it worse, ask my friend.

Story:Had a police officer friend that broke his middle finger and they put it in splints, so he was flipping everyone off. They were playing foot ball and another officer broke his leg or ankle, or something. I am like, "Damn, maybe you guys should start playing touch foot ball." He said, "That was touch football." Needless to say, I dont play sports with that group.

Rough Hitman, very sorry to hear. I lost my ACL some years back in a horrible accident that shattered my femur. The ACL is a tough one to make a call on. Doctors have varying opinions on it; some doctors think that some people don't actually need it, depending on how much stability exists in the leg without the ACL. Some people can barely walk without the ACL. Clearly I'm not in too bad a shape. I snowboard in the winter and played several games of beach volleyball tonight. My doctor has the opinion that I shouldn't have any more surgery on my leg unless I have another injury. Surgeries have side effects, like scarring, nerve damage and muscle loss, though an ACL replacement is relatively minor. It has got to be the most common sports-related surgery. Professional athletes are known to return to the game soon after having it done, but of course they're young and in great shape. There are probably hundreds of good illustrated websites out there. Here's one I just found through a quick search:http://www.scoi.com/aclrecon.htmLigament replacement takes a lot of painful and time-consuming rehabilitation. If you don't push the rehab, you will lose range of motion. You only have a relatively small window in which to make really good gains in recovery. Take it easy while your Dr. says to keep the weight off. But don't let up once he says you can start rehab. Ligaments take a long time to heal. Unlike bones and muscles, ligaments and cartilage don't have any blood supply. All nutrients travel via osmosis through the tissue. Very slow.

Your injuries sound pretty bad. If the pain is keeping you up at night, ask your Dr. to give you some Tylox. THE next best thing to an on-command morphine hose in your vein. Take care and update us regularly.

AZ,

REALLY sorry to hear about your injury bud. That's no good. I tore my ACL in my right knee about 4 years ago now. Mine was a little worse since I tore a crapload of cartiladge (sp?). Hopefully just an ACL tear is all you had as far as the knee goes.

Advice: Before you go in for surgery, ask the doctor if you need a blood thinner. My friend tore his ACL in September, doc didn't give him thinner before surgery and he had to be bed-ridden for a while and was on medication for 6 months...also couldn't drink cuz of it. Anyways, the healing process isn't that bad if you're already physically fit.

Good luck to you and keep us posted,

Nick

Nick - I'm already on a thinner (coumadin) because of my artificial valve, so that's all good...

I (and the doc) aren't positive it's the ACL or the MCL - All she knows is that there's some tearing and cartilage damage. There's no stability in the knee, and if I put weight on it, it collapses to the inside. Feels like trying to balance a bowling ball on to of another bowling ball (coated in Vaseline:D).

Robert, that sounds miserable - How long ago was your accident? I'm not really concerned about the painkillers - I'm the type that is actually comforted by pain... It lets me know how i'm progressing, kind of a barometer of how things are healing.

Thanks all for your thoughts - I'll keep ya posted.

Smitty, better bring the Briggs & Stratton (and a bucket of KFC) for Tino's mom - she's pretty demanding. :D

Ooooh, that sounds worse than I thought. You might have torn your meniscus, in addition to a ligament and cartilage. The inside collapse sounds like that kind of injury. My injury will have been 6 years ago come this July. Any small amount of physical activity causes discomfort and swelling, but it was a pretty major thing. I was *thisclose* to losing my leg. Luckily my Dr. at the time was a real pro. My biggest concern is what happens when I pass middle age. Will I be snowboarding then? I hope so. But the risk of injury goes through the roof at that age, and I would rather have the ACL replacement done now when I'm younger and can do the rehab. My Dr. doesn't agree...if I were a car under warranty, I'd consider forcing a failure to make a claim! But it's hard to convince yourself to snowboard into a tree. There are other issues too, like wanting to remove all the metal in there, including the broken screw that's rattling around (snowboarding).Let us know what your Dr. figures out is injured. When's your first surgery?

Sorry about your injuries AZI've had a couple of friends with knee injuries (and few minor ones myself) and the biggest thing I can stress is too take it easy after the surgery/therapy. Take plenty of time off from softball, sparring, etc. You sound like youre in pretty good shape, but give your body time to make sure it heals properly. If you injure your knee again, its gonna be much longer road to recovery.

Wow, that's terrible AZ! But look at it from the bright side...more time to hang out on NICO and postwhore away (not that you need it). I have to go to the doctor soon too, I was snowboarding last winter and went off a jump...flipped upside down and landed on my face and shoulder from about 12 feet up, didnt do any real damage but it bruised me really well and now I have a big pocket of fluid on my hip and the skin is dead there...it's kinda cool because I can push needles through it and I dont feel a thing :) There's a positive side to most injuries...either that or I just think strangely...
