things to do:
Walk the mall: Capital, White House, Archives, Smithsonian museums (you could spend a week just in the museums), Washington Monument, WW2 memorial, Vietnam Vets, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, etc...
The Bus Tours are a good way to see the stuff that's off the mall.. Various historical buildings (Ford's Theatre), monuments, embassies, etc...
I'm not sure if the FBI still does tours, but if they do.. it's really cool.
It's too bad you can't go in the White House anymore :(
Arlington National Cemetery is a must see.
A night out in old town Alexandria is awesome.
Did I mention museums?

It's gonna be a really short trip, just a couple of days. Greg, Andy, and I are gonna go see some things while we are close by. I haven't been since I was 19. We don't have anywhere NEAR the time I wish we did so I just wanted to know the highlights.

I can only think of one thing...

1. CALL ME AND TELL ME WHEN THIS IS HAPPENING SO WE CAN GRAB A BITE TO EAT OR SOMETHING. I'm only like a 35-40 min drive from DC.

If mad was home, hit the range and go shootin!

In lieu of that, go to the Library of Congress and visit the Constitution.

Then visit the Supreme Court

Then visit Congress

Then visit the White House

Contemplate the ideas that formed out great country and all the parts that make it work. Then get the hell out of there before dark so you don't get robbed and killed!

Definitely walk the mall. If you can I suggest checking it out during the day and at night. Gives you 2 completely different perspectives.

Holli & I went a couple of years ago and loved it. We're planning another trip in the next year or so - there's no way to take in everything in just a week, let alone a couple of days.

1. Walk the mall - it's hard to get an idea of how big everything is without doing this - see the WWII & Vietnam War Memorials
2. Washington Monument - fitness types can walk up the inside and check out the art on the inside faces of the blocks
3. Lincoln Memorial - because if it's not required on a DC visit it should be
4. Jefferson Memorial - more impressive to me than the Lincoln Memorial
5. Arlington Cemetery & Tomb of the Unknowns - if you time everything right you should watch the changing of the guard
6. National Air & Space Museum - main location, you probably won't have time to visit the Udvar-Hazy Centre
7. Library of Congress - easily the best tour & most awe inspiring thing I saw in DC - It's the one thing I tell everyone to not miss
8. Capitol Building - you'll need a pass (free) to enter the gallery

I highly suggest buying a two-day unlimited use ticket for one of the Hop On - Hop Off bus tours. It's an easy way to get around, give your feet a rest and get a semi-guided tour all at the same time.

yeah Im like no more than 20 mins away. I think Krash and SentraStace are also nearby.

Things to do:
- Eat at some dam good restaraunts
- If its Spring time, go and see the Cherry Blossoms
- Have to walk the mall. My favorites are the Air and Space museum, the Pencil, and they have moved the National History Museum but still close by. I havent been but I hear its really great
- Also off the main mall; Spy Museum, Holocaust, The US Mint (If they tour still, dont know), The Newseum, etc, etc.
- Go out for a night of drinkin in the right parts of DC (Georgetown or Adams Morgan!)and ride a cab or Metro to your hotel or wherever your staying and..... do it. :naughty:

Whatever you do, do NOT get lost in the bad parts because you might not survive..

It's waaay to cold to walk the mall now, I don't get why everyone thinks doing the smithsonian is a good idea now...

The dc air and space is kind of boring now compared to dulles, but in the winter, I would check out the restaurant scene. Hash knows the best spots!

last time I was in DC (10 years ago), the Constitution was in the archives building on display. Did they move it to the Library of Congress now? Maybe after Nicholas Cage stole it they put in a safer place?

The museums! See http://www.smithsonian.org/museums for a full list. But you gotta go to the Air and Space Museums. One's located on the mall, and they have a second near Dulles Airport (I havent been there yet).

Metro rail will take you everywhere you wanna go (except Dulles A&S museum).

There are tons of great restaurants. Restaurant week ends today, but many restaurants extend the offer another week. http://www.washington.org/restaurantwk

Bundle up and be prepared to walk about 5 miles/day!

The 'Smithsonian' metro stop drops you off at the mall next to History Museum (I think), between the Capitol and the Pencil (I think). Across the field is the glass enclosed A&S museum!

Go to the White House. Start jumping up and down while screaming "Allahu Akbar". This gives you a special Gov tour package that usual people don't get to see.
