Like the title says...I ran my S14 tonight at Gainesville Raceway, and managed a best of 13.399 @ 110.18mph. This was with a 2.3 60'...hehe.

The setup: '96 S14 SE, KA-T, 12psi from a T3/T04E 57-trim, RevHard manifold, JWT ECU with Cobra MAF and 50lb injectors (base timing is at ~22 BTDC), JWT cams, GReddy VSPL intercooler, 2.5" turbo outlet to 3" full exhaust, ACT street clutch and B&M shifter, J30 VLSD...

Previous best was 13.6 @ 104 when I was at 8psi with the "Hacked MAF" setup...but I did have a ****ty boost controller that added tons of lag between shifts. That's been replaced.

I only made 4 runs, and each was a little faster then the last...main change was the RPM I shifted at. I kept going a little higher until I shifted at ~7,100rpm in each gear, and made 3 quick, clean shift (not typical for me).

Runs were:

#1: 13.744 @ 107.41 (2.315 60')

#2: 13.549 @ 108.43 (2.308 60')

#3: 13.309 @ 109.31 (2.186 60')

#1: 13.399 @ 110.18 (2.322 60')

As you can see...I'm no drag racer (and have no aspirations to be one)...sh!tty 60-foots were due to soft launches and not enough traction (245/45-17 Kumho MXs) - But I'm quite happy with the MPH. That's what I was out there for anyway...

Also, I had my car on the scales at a local scrapyard earlier in the day, and it weighed in at 2780lbs. That's with sunroof removed, trunk gutted - Otherwise full interior, stereo, etc...

This is down from 2860 back when it was N/A and had 2 amps and a sunroof. Obviously I removed a lot of weight, but the turbo setup added some of it back for a net loss of only 80lbs.

So race weight was right at ~3000lbs with me in it.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Never!

As it sits, 12psi (~290rwhp-ish) is already *almost* too much for the short road course stuff I like to do. I't's nice for Sebring and Road Atlanta, maybe even Roebling Road...but it'll step out with too much throttle input. I'm really happy with the power right now...I'll leave it there.

As for the weight: ~2850lbs is a typical stock S14 5-speed with sunroof. Mine was heavy-ish at 2860 before the turbo stuff...and it already was without a spare tire! So I took out ~120lbs, but added ~40lbs of turbo goodies.

A base S14 without sunroof is probably ~2750 stock with spare tire.

But when I weighed it today, I had a tick over half a tank or premium...maybe 9 gallons (@ 6.5lbs/gal, that's another 50lbs).

my s14 base with me in it weighed 2850 and thats with almost full tank of gas and full interior+trunk.

Nice times btw. But man, you are risky takin it up to that high rpm while boosting.

why is it a risk?his car makes most of its power in the higher rpms since he has JWT cams and peak cylinder pressure in his motor is prolly around 4500 rpms (peak tq)

Measure the internal forces of the motor at that RPM... by that logic I should be able to easily achieve 7800 rpm in my SR which isn't exactly outrageous, but is asking alot out of the bearings.

i dont know of many people having problems with the KA at that rpm. The only reason for Orion to stay in that rpm range is cuz he is making power there. The only KA ive known to have problems at high rpms spun a bearing due to 8000 rpm rev-limiter (thats another story in itself).7800 rpms is asking alot for SR without RAS's.

RAS = 80

Not exactly something to break the bank over, but you get what I ment.

It's more of a longevity thing, the higher the forces the greater the fatigue.

All good points here...and the engine is under a lot of stress at 12psi and +7000rpm.

But it makes good power up there, and only sees that kind of RPM when needed...on the road course I shift at ~6500 or less.

As for the bearings...with good oil (Mobil 1) and good oil pressure, they should be able to take that kind of abuse no problem.

I'm more worried about a little detonation destroying the stock pistons rather than the bearings...

As for longevity...if I get 2yrs from any given KA, I'll be happy. So far it looks like this one could go forever, but we'll see.

If I wanted 200,000 miles from a motor, I'd drive a Kia.

Yes..it's a '96 ECU, but my '96 has all the emmsions stuff removed. A strock '95 ECU never threw codes, but this one does...always a secondary 02 code.

Otherwise it's great...not the best for max power, but it makes good, safe power.

Nice numbers man. Can't wait to go to the track and see what I can generate.

I have a quick question to ask you,I have recently turned up the boost from 9.55psi to 11.75psi and noticed that the car response better with the 50lb jwt ecu program. Do you think it is really need to get a safc to lean out the jwt ecu if you are at 13psi?

Damn it Brian, you make me want to put my ECU in so bad. I am gonna be running 1 bar though, so we will see.

Congratz on the runs, we are now equal, haha. Although you still have a lot of weight loss to go through since mine sits at 2580 with full interior.

I don't mean to take this out on you...but...

Why does everyone seem to think the JWT fuel curve is so bad..?

Mine is spot on...high-11s under boost. Nice and safe...not too rich. I've read that people rarely see gains with leaning out fuel past the 12s, so why risk a chance of detnation for a couple HP...?

All the JWT cars I've seen with sh!tty fuel have been from improperly adjusted TPS sensor, boost leaks (indicated by low idle vacuum), etc...

Mine runs 19-20 vacuum at idle, and no boost leaks...and has a great fuel curve. I get great gas mileage even!

That being said, I think an AFC is a waste if the rest of the setup is solid.

The main thing that JWT goes REALLY conservative on is the timing...most KAs get ~17degrees MAX under boost. It drops to ~14 total timing with a stab of the throttle, then the ECU will feed back a couple degrees until redline.

A KA @ 12psi should have about 19 degrees total...so I advanced the base timing to 22 BTDC to make up for that.

That's my school of thought...

How much weight did you save by removing the s14 sunroof? What exactly did you remove? What did you put in place of the glass sunroof/components?!?

nice times btw.

For the price JWT can't be beat...simple as that. Not even any need to argue the point. I would use the SAFC to lean out the mix if I were running alky at the same time, then have my AFs around 13.5 or so....

Hey man. I saw you run out there. You had the champagne colored S14 right? I was in the red S13. I though i would be the only KA-T out there. Last time I went there was an SR20 and a RB20. It was my first run on the KA-T but it was acting up. Nice times. Are you going out there again anytime soon?

Huh...I never saw you run...but I did leave at ~8:30.

I probably won't run again soon unless I make a major change...I prefer racing where you have to turn the wheel - I'll be at Gainesville Raceway, but on the road course!

What's your setup, how'd you run?

Are you a G'ville local (EDIT: N/M...I see "Melrose" by your name)

I left about at about 8. I'm running a Garrett T04B, revhard manifold, Vortech 8:1FMU, 2.5"downpipe to Apexi N1 exhaust. 5psi until I can get a better fuel system. I ran a best of 15.3 at 93mph. It was acting up on me. It would start this problem where it wouldn't go past 3psi. I'm working on that right now.

well since we're on the topic of JWT ecu's anyways. heres a question. i'm gonna ship out the ECU that i bought from Orion to JWT to have ti chipped to run with 550cc injectors, and with maps to run 9:1 or 8.5:1 comp ratio. however i'm planning to put it in my stock 9.5:1 comp engine until the summer running 12 psi.

since orion says the timing curve is really conservative on it. do you think i can pull it off?

also i'm still debating on waht compression to run. i'm goal it 350whp on street gas ( 93 octane ) and 400whp on C16. do you think 9:1 comp ratio would be the better choice? cuase i know if i had maps for a 9:1 i can almost definitly pull it off by running it on my stock comp.

you should be fine if you run stock compression for a lil while. they dont advance the timing really that much for the 8.5:1 programs.this i what i would do (knowing they program conservatively): tell them you want the 8.5:1 program and run 9:1 pistons.

i just did a compression test on my car today in school and the readings were perfect. i was getting 180-185 across the board. i was amazed at how it saw boost for 30K miles and the engine is still perfect. ( which kinda makes me wonder where did my 20-30whp have gone ) anyways so your telling me that i can run a 8.5:1 map on my stock comp? alright if you say so. i'll give it a shot and try not to beat the crap out of hte car too much.

also do you think running one step colder plugs, and a clogging cat could be the problem? i mean i lost over 20whp thats a lot. if its not the engine, i have no clue what else could've caused it. so i'm wondering would colder plugs effect power?

edit: i'm also running a Z MAF. if i get a JWT ecu to run with it. what do i do with the SAFC? right now its on 2 in 5 out to run the MAF. do i put it back to 5 in and 5 out ?

Yeah, the timing is conservative enough that you'll be fine with the more advanced curve and 9.5:1.

As for the Z32 MAF...if the ECU is tuned for it, ditch the AFC. JWT fuel curve is good enough, that it's not worth messing with IMO.

(BTW, ECU is on the way...I'll e-mail the tracking #)
