tires sizes

i was wonderin and confused about the different and whats better for comfort and performance...my questions is im looking to get some 20's but as of tires sizes im confuse about the first number cuz the 20's i want can either be 9.5 or 10's offset etc....im familar with the middle and last number stands for but the first number like 235 or 225 im confuse so...if i was gettin 20's with an offset of 8.5,9,9.5, or 10....what size of tire should i get for better overall comfort and preformance...sorry i kno i cant explain it too well...thanks
