Well first off, HI! My name is Bill I am from Wichita KS and I have a few questions for you Q45 guys..

Ok, there is this kid that has a 1991 Q45, cheap, but he doesnt know if the guides are bad. He "says" the chain never broke or slipped. But he has the starter removed. Hmmm....

So, is there an "easy" way to detirmine wether the engine is crap at this point..? And, how much on average, would a timing chain and guides job cost at a dealership??

Any help would be great....

Thanks in advance fella's!!!

Um, seeing if the engine will start is probably be a good start. Can't really tell other than that, or pulling off half the engine to look inside. Why is he trying to sell a car that doesn't have a starter?

Timing chain and guides will set you back about $300 and then 6-8 hours install at a dealership.

Welcome to NICO!

Well the starter is in the trunk. I guess the story is that the guy that sold him the car (as a project) took the starter off and in hopes of doing the work on the chain and guides himself. Speaking of which is that a project left for the dealership?

Anyways, I will see if he will let me put the starter on it and try.

Its got 102,000 on it, but from what i have been reading here, that really dosen't matter, it will break whenever it wants too.

So $300 for the guides and timing chain??

Thanks....

You mean $300 in parts (plus markup) and at least a $1000 in labor, and Infiniti dealers generally want to replace the chains with the attendant increase in labor charges.

You better hope they don't screw up the chain timing or they owe you a motor...

You must pull the front covers to really verify.

If guides not all there, then some are in the pan.

You could try to hand crank it.

I'm wondering as to why someone would pull the starter to do a guide job.Lack of a chain wrench?

If you're the DIY type these might help.

You'd be doing yourself a great injustice not the hear/see that car run. You refer to the seller as "this Kid" which means he's not family or good friend. Which means he probably doesn't have your best interest at heart. I'd be asking does the engine smoke when it's running, does the Ps work, transmission shift, and a host of other questions that can be answered w/ out car on. If he was going to do the guides, then why not let him do it if he wants to increase his asking price afterward then so be it. You sound young, Don't get J-raked! The Q can be and abyss to through money into if you buy the wrong one, got rid of my last one cause of too many high dollar fixes.

Yeah i mean he is just a guy off of the board i frequent for Wichita Racers. I can get the car for like 500-600 from him. I was just sort of wanting to know the amount of time and money I would have to make this car decent again. I just totaled my "daily driver" last Friday. And this was going to be another one. Cause up here its still to cold to break the bike out, and I dont want to drive my track car everywhere you know. Thank you all for all the info. You guys know your s.hit.!!!

Having done 50+ prebuy inspects on early Q we have written up estimates that range from $4,000 to as high as $12,000 for need work to return to near new performance.

Currently we find about $4-5,000 on average of needed work unless from a old regular client who spent the 15 cents per driven mile since day one.

We had one old regular that sold his Q because it needed only $7,000 what a waste since he has spent $22,000 over the last 7 years.

We usually see bad diffs, driveshafts, transmission, brakes, ABS, engines, AC HVAC system, fuelpumps, all rubber, shocks, suspension tires, air bags you name it unless you are an EXPERT assume the worst.

You can easily buy one than needs more than $6,000, you won't find one that needs less than $3,000 to start.

If you can get it for that go for it cause you you could always get your money back by parting it out. Sounds like this one.

I too would like to know why he'd remove the starter to do the guides. I know I never have in the 2 times I've done it.
