About 90% done. I left the spark plugs in -- it saves a little time, you can still turn the crank using the crank pulley bolt and 27 mm socket when you need to, and the compression helps keep the crank sprocket from turning when you are fitting the new belt and don't want it to.
Before I started the new OEM belt install, I verified that the marks on the new belt were at the exact correct locations by counting the teeth between each mark. That way once I got outside I was able to just align the belt marks with the marks on the five sprockets, without having to try and count teeth on a belt in place that is serpentined around idlers, etc.
I used your recommended check to make sure the crank sprocket was at #1 TDC with everything aligned -- since that sprocket only has about 25 teeth, if you're off by one tooth its about 14 degrees so pretty easy to notice.
Completed reassembly and started her up and all was OK, except that the crank pulley wobbles--turns out when I put the crank pulley back on "for good" the crank was rotated with the keyway at about 4 o'clock, and since I couldn't see it well I accidentally pushed the key out of the keyway. It is stuck sideways between the back of the crank pulley and the pulley washer.
No harm done, but some partial disassembly/reassembly will be required to get it right. I should have taken the extra time to turn the engine over using the crank bolt until the keyway was somewhere between 10 and 2, where its status during the pulley reinstallation could be more easily seen.
