HI,I don't know if you have resolved your problem or not,but a timing belt rarely "breaks" it will shear a tooth or two off and then the gears cant turn it.In your case it sounds like you might be one of the lucky ones.A lot of times when you shut off your car a tooth will shear off from the "kickback" of the engine, and a lot of times a tooth will shear off when you try to start your car.If this is the case for you, then you will have done no damage to your engine

I just replaced mine, Started with a water pump issue. Got in there and there was a chunk missing on the timing belt. Called Crest Infiniti in Plano Tx and got one for $45. I figured I could just swap it. NOT! Had to go find a manual- lots of searching to find one at the library. It had the directions and how to align it. Got it back on and the darned water pump broke nearly in half! So I got to do it all over again. I just bought a service manual for a 93 J30 off Ebay for $13.50 including shipping.

to bad I didn't look in here before I started. I got a new pump from Napa and it seems to be ok. SO far! It's got a lifetime warranty on it. I did buy a OEM timing belt. I'm waiting on a service manual from Ebay. Right now, i think I could take it down, put it back together in a few hours at the most.

Thanks for the procedure, Sinan.

So far so good. I was able to get everything torn down, the old timing belt removed, and the new water pump installed in about 5 1/2 hours on Saturday.

My problem was clearly the tensioner. The old belt was so loose I was able to remove it without touching the old tensioner at all. Thankfully all the timing marks appeared to still be in alignment. My crank pulley has two marks about 2 cm apart on it, one deeper than the other. The left (deeper) one lines up exactly at zero deg TDC with all the other marks aligned.

I think I dodged a bullet big time with the belt operating as loose as it was. Hopefully a few more hours getting the new belt in and everything reassembled will do it. Wish I could have finished the job but I had other commitments.

Brutally cold in Chicago Saturday for this time of year, car work outdoors at nearly 0 deg C not fun.

About 90% done. I left the spark plugs in -- it saves a little time, you can still turn the crank using the crank pulley bolt and 27 mm socket when you need to, and the compression helps keep the crank sprocket from turning when you are fitting the new belt and don't want it to.

Before I started the new OEM belt install, I verified that the marks on the new belt were at the exact correct locations by counting the teeth between each mark. That way once I got outside I was able to just align the belt marks with the marks on the five sprockets, without having to try and count teeth on a belt in place that is serpentined around idlers, etc.

I used your recommended check to make sure the crank sprocket was at #1 TDC with everything aligned -- since that sprocket only has about 25 teeth, if you're off by one tooth its about 14 degrees so pretty easy to notice.

Completed reassembly and started her up and all was OK, except that the crank pulley wobbles--turns out when I put the crank pulley back on "for good" the crank was rotated with the keyway at about 4 o'clock, and since I couldn't see it well I accidentally pushed the key out of the keyway. It is stuck sideways between the back of the crank pulley and the pulley washer.

No harm done, but some partial disassembly/reassembly will be required to get it right. I should have taken the extra time to turn the engine over using the crank bolt until the keyway was somewhere between 10 and 2, where its status during the pulley reinstallation could be more easily seen.

the woodruff key is important to keep the drive shaft pulley turning at the same rate as the crankshaft, as there is a constant load on that pulley, if the key is not there, it would cause loss of power, heavy steering, and no AC.....

best of luck, i hope that you will get it back together soon
