I'm working on putting on a new timing belt and I'm very confused. My new belt came with white lines on it. I lined those up with the dots on the cam gears. I also placed the crank at top dead center. I'm just confused because despite the white lines on the belt lining up with the cam dots, it doesn't look like the dots are level with each other. Does anyone have any ideas?

The crank is at TDC right now, exhaust cam is pretty much straight to the right and the intake cam looks like its a bit above straight to the left. A tooth off maybe.

Altho the marks don't really matter on the timing belt itself as you need to ensure the timing marks are lined up perfectly, here is some information for you.

Make sure that number one piston is at TDC on the compression stroke, the dot on the crank sprocket should line up with the mark on the oil pump outer casing.

You need to use an open end spanner on the cams (22mm i think from memory, its easier to hold the cams in position) and a mate to hold them (it can be done with one person, but trickier), and line up the dots on each side with the corresponding marks on the cam sprocket backing plate.

Your new timing belt white marks will line up with each of the dots but only one way, make sure you look at the direction of the belt, the arrows (or some form of directional indicator) on the belt need to point to the right (when looking directly at the front of the motor).

Start by lining up the correct white mark (after a couple of goes you will see how all three marks will line up) with the crank sprocket mark and run the belt on the inside of the idler pulley, around the exhaust cam gear (line up the white mark), then around the intake cam gear (again line the mark up) and then here comes the difficult part:

You need to run the belt on the inside of the tensioner pulley. Make sure your tensioner pulley is loosened of at the nut (13mm) and use an allen key to move the tensioner to the left, slip the belt over and then use the allen key again to tension the belt. ALL THIS NEEDS TO BE PERFORMED WITHOUT MOVING THE TIMING MARKS OUT OF ALIGNMENT!!!!!!!

You will probably need to do this a few times to get it right, unless you jag it the first time as it is a difficult process to get right

Good Luck!

Ignore the lines on the belt. Line the gears up as per the FSM or the guides posted above and then carefully turn the engine over twice by hand (that means the crank pulley starts out at the TDC mark, passes the TDC mark once as you turn, then finally stops at the TDC mark again), feeling for any kind of major resistance like a valve contacting the piston. If the marks on the cam gears line up with the marks on the back cover again you did it properly

Taking the sparkplugs out will also make this easier, if you haven't already done that.

The marks on the belt lined up and so did the marks on the gears to the backing plate. It all worked out.
