hey guys. ok ok i know you all have different opinions of the flat black 240's, you s14 guys hate it and the s13 guys think its hot . well anyway im looking to improve the look of my 93 coupe. the paint isnt great and ive chosen to use the krylon flat black paint as reciently used in SCC on a STI. i think it is a sexy look, and costs nothing compaired to a real paint job. Do you guys have any tips, warnings, suggestions, comments or PICTURES of other s13's painted this way?? help me out

~also, what about a black vinal stripe on the side like the SCC project silvia? should i find something more original?

personally, I don't think its worth the time and effort. I would prep the car and primer it myself and then take it to the body shop for htem to finish by just applying hte paint and clear cote. You'd save alot of money that way.

oh come on, ur paint is FINE...the idea behind the flat black is utilitarian (just like the rest of the "no function then no form" ideals) they use it because it's easy to spray on and is the best looking of the spray can colors. Although it does look cool, it also does things like keeps metal from rusting, and makes cars 1 color instead of 5...dotn do it unless you ABSOLUTELY must...and if you do, dont put that damn sticker on like SCC...it'll make you look like a total tool

I say go for it. Flat black looks mean. Just be aware that everything stains the paint. Bugs, and stuff. It doesnt seem to seal as well as regular paint.

there two types of flat black....

ghetto flat black (actually black primer....):

real flat black (as painted by earl schieb... lol):

the only reason i did it was because it looked like this before:

as you can see it was quite an improvement. the first layer of flat black i put on cost about $50 (reason i did it...), and the one painted by earl schieb (maaco-type paint shop) cost about $250.

i've been through it dude..... don't do it to be cool, do it because your paint sucks and you don't have money. you will never be happy with it... you can never wash your car, it never blends right and you cant pick up chicks with it. on the other hand........... everyone, absolutely everyone stares at your car like its something out of back to the future. preference i guess.... now that i look at it again it was pretty cool, but there's no way i'd pick it over my current car thats "real" black

lol, i read that article too and was contemplating it b/c my car needs quite a bit of body work, but my friend hooked me up w/ this guy who does a real good job for pretty cheap (for complete body dent/scratch/etc removal and paint job for a different color for $1500 total) so now it's all up in the air

My Nismo: Damn, got any tips to get a flat black paint job to turn out like your good one? Who is this Earl Schieb character? My friend has a "multicolored" Sileighty, and I think it'd look damn cool with an even flat black paint job like that one. Where should we take it, what specifically should we ask for?

Note, this friend I'm speaking of is the infamous 2BN_S13 of these very forums. His car is like 3 colors. He wants it "gray", which I think would look like Bondo. Please, everyone, help me convince him to do black. Private Message him randomly and tell him to paint his car flat black.

EDIT: Event, are those Weds wheels? Whatever they are, I like 'em.

I know this thread seems to circle around flat black, but has anyone seen the project they did in SCC where they painted that Celica, what appears to be, flat YELLOW and BLACK??? Its looks interesting....

Hey, there's different stuff you can use if you're doing a diy project. They have flat black primer and a gray primer. If you're going for flat black paint, I would suggest gray primer so you can see if you missed a spot. Krylon makes a flat black spray paint that is part of their camouflage paints series. It turns out pretty nice. I did some interior pieces with it and none of it came out splotchy. You can get it at just about any hardware store for around $5-6 a can.

btw 2BN_S13, they also have a dark gray, and a bunch of other colors as part of that series. You could even do urban camo, haha.

hey 2bn, i was talkin to ur buddy on AIM and i told him if u guy want, i'll be spraying my car again this weekend or this coming week, and since you guys are close u can come check it out and hopefully i can convince you...i'll just be primering w/ some grey over the new parts and anything that needs to be re-touched, and then spraying the good krylon ultra flat black over everything

i dont like the way that earl scheib looks no offense. i'm really partial to the actual FLAT black...not satin finish

EDIT: my wheels are NOT wedsports...although now i look at it they kidna do look like them they're BBS RK 17x8...poopy offset w/ a massive bolt on spacer

front=+9 rear is +14

I've got to admit, I really like that satin black. I liked the straight flat black on the SCC STi too though. I actually wish I had a car that I could do this to, but it'd be pretty damned silly to ruin my 3-week old Silver Moss paint job (especially considering that I didn't have to pay a dime for it).

Oh well, I guess I'll just live vicariously through 2BN_S13's car. Should look almost exactly like Mynismo's car if we do it that way, only with Tri-spokes and the OEM wing.

i'm actually considering of getting what seems like an sr5 and doing this to it... (red oxidized paint).... But then again, it's an sr5 and anything outside of free would just seem like a hassle..

Thanx for all your input guys, this is really helping me out. Some1 mentioned that krylon camo paint....what about the Rust resistant paint...they have a color called flat black and that is exactly what SCC used on the STI.~Also. does anyone have any tips of how to sand, and whether i should tape off section by section. stuff like that?

~ btw, i think the satin black does look sexy

that hatch looks good that way. I think if your car is extremely modded out then it loooks good. Doesn't look good at all on a near-stock 240sx

does the bumper on that s14 look like it doesnt fit right against that fender to anyone else? could it be the paint or the lighting?

i agree... i had this to back me up

to get the "satin" black just go to a body shop and tell them you want it to have a flat black look. basically its just all the prep work plus sealer. the sealer is basically "flat black".

i like the ghetto flat black look as well, but its hard to find a flat black paint that actually gets that look. i actually rattle canned it the first time around with black primer. keep in mind it takes hours and hours to do this as well (took me a good two weeks because i hand-sanded it like a dumbass).

btw, the one thing that was great about this was that i didn't give a flying f$&% what the hell happened to my body. someone keys me... i take out the can and spray it. get into an accident... i hammer it out and spray it. i gave it like a biweekly touchup lol. just take out the can and spray it.

i think the best time to use this type of paint is as a drift car. the sil80 was extremely fast and i wanted to keep it as a drift car, but its a little expensive as a third car more about it here

I currently have the flat black paint job and it sucks here in Colorado. The combination of crap *** roads and drunk truckers kicking up rocks makes for tiny rust spots.

The plan is to resand and use my new compressor and paint gun to get an even spray of flat black, then cover it in a few coats of clear.

I call it my "semi gloss flat black" look.

you can do flat black they make a certain kind of primer that won't rust your vehicle to hell. Its made essp for people that just want primer vehicles.

I forget where to buy it though. i think

i think that's "sealer" not primer...i've only seen white sealer before but it had a similar finish. i think the difference is that sealer is waterproof and works the same as primer...meaning you can wait a long time before painting and you dont have to re-prime it...just scuff and paint
