Sometimes, but not always (actually about 50% of the time), I get this weird rattling noise from my motor when I put the car in gear. Sometimes is quiet, sometimes its loud, sometimes it keeps rattling to about 2200 rpm's, sometimes it is completely quiet. It happens when I put the car in first gear (or any gear), and I can feel the rattle in the shift knob. Like I said, sometimes its not there, and I can't feel it. I got my girlfriend to put the car in first while I felt the valve cover. I could feel it there as well. Everytime I try to drive it to my mechanic, it decides it doesn't want to make the noise any more. I have no earthly idea of what the variable conditions are that make it want to make that noise. Any help at all? S14 SR20 by the way, and it doesn't happen when the car is not in gear.

Also, it happens everytime I drive pull into the parking lot of my bank. Thats the only spot where I know it makes the noise. But how could that be a factor?

sounds like a clutch throw out bearing, or a pressure plate problem. more than likely, the pp.

would that rattle be felt all the way to the valve cover? I figured it was something like that. Thanks for the help though.

noises can reverberate through metal pretty well. get a stethescope from the parts store, they are cheap, and try to make it make the noise again, then listen to the bell housing.
