So i'm planning on driving out to the east coast to see what the big deal about new york is. I'm gonna go sometime this month for just a weekend get away but was wondering if anybody lives out that way that could give me some recommendations on what i could check out while in town for two or three days...(wow, long sentence, perhaps a run-on, lol)

p.s. i'll be taking a lady friend of mine, so keep that in mind.

new york is over-rated and on the weekends it's even worse. too crowded, people are d-bags, too many retarded tourists. if you do come over this way, lmk, i'll catch a train out for a day trip with fay-fay.

lady friend? damn, you're fast. central park (horse and carriage rides). little italy for dinner noms. museum of natural history. or just wander around. don't go to ellis island or statue of liberty, unless you really like standing in lines.

Well, much depends on your budget and what you're into. I guarantee it will suck if you attempt to navigate thru it in a car and do it on a shoe string budget. There are so many things to do and see there, it'd take pages to list them all. I grew up right across the river near the GW bridge. Here's a few off the top of my head,.traditional landmarks include Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, a laundry list of museums (like the Museum of Modern Art, Mus. of Natural History, the Guggenheim), Central Park, Chinatown, see a concert at Madison Square Garden, catch a broadway show, or catch an off broadway show, FAO Schwartz, visit Times Square, go across the Brooklyn Bridge, witness drug deals and stripped cars in the South Bronx :chuckle: , catch a Yankee game in the Bronx, or a Mets game in Flushing, Rockaway Beach, window shop at Macy's, Saks, Bloomies, Tiffany's, visit the UN, ride the famous Staten Island Ferry, Greenwich Village, wake up early and visit Rockefeller Center, watch the Today show broadcast live, they regularly have live performances, you could ride the Circle Line, which is a fun mini-cruise around Manhattan. How's that.

May I suggest NOT staying at the YMCA in Chelsea, no matter HOW "fresh" the guy at the front desk claims the plastic on the mattresses is.

Wouldn't happen. He would be too busy finding the most disturbing s*** to eat. No time to plague the city.

Wrong.

I'd give them Hep C and smallpox. They'd in turn give me the hiv. I'd be pozzed up before I could say "cesspool"

Absolutely true about the cars.

Comedy clubs are fun, and NY has some famous ones, like Dangerfields and Carolines, but they are not unique to NY, and likely more expensive than in your town.

You're assuming New Yorkers (aside from maybe Nala) would be willing to have sex with you.

You can tell a town has self-esteem problems when it spends its entire existence bragging to the rest of the country about its supposed greatness.

Its also funny how it finally took an a-hole Republican to finally make an effort to clean up that leftist s***.

You can have your car-hating, tax-levying, overblown pile of congested ego-masturbatory idiocy. I've been to Bangkok (and that city is filthy) and enjoyed myself there much more than NYC. Hell, I even managed to enjoy Detroit, and Detroit is terrible.

And let me correct you on your statement -- the STATE of New York is beautiful. Little Stephen Sett lives outside of NYC.

I haven't been to NYC since 1999, but I had a great time and found the people there to be no more terse or rude than those you find in downtown Chicago. I did the "cheap" touristy stuff and had a blast: view from top of the ESB, riding back and forth on the Staton Island Ferry (which was free at least at that time), Natural History Museum, Central Park, Times Square. We accidentally stumbled into a group of paparazzi outside the Playboy club (I *think* it's on 5th avenue across from Trump, IMMS) and ended up stargazing for an hour or so. Pizza was disappointing, subway was hot and hotels were expensive, but otherwise it was a great experience and I've been wanting to go back ever since.

Everyone should go at least once... But make sure to have tons of spending money. Hotels are ridiculous, food out is $10 a meal on the cheap (unless you fancy street meat and personal gas issues) and the people aren't really there. I could not manage $220 a week for food when I stayed for two weeks. It was closer to $350.

There is a little comfort Inn in Brooklyn that's kind of nice (and cheaper) in the Sunset Park area if you don't mind the 30 minute train ride with local transfers into Manhattan every day. The people in the Subway really ARE there.

like mentioned before... comedy clubs. also, the helicopter tours are something to look into.

NYC is not overrated. its an awesome place if you know people who live in the city and you stay for a while. you need to be out with locals who show you around the fun spots.

Cheapest, cleanest hotel I found was The Pod. NYC hotels are a disappointment for me... Vegas has them beat! Definitely visit Canal street & pick yourself up some counterfeit contraband. Soho & Italy were great.
