My experience of NYC is this...

Amazing nightlife and a lot of culture. You will most likely see it all in terms of characters.
Tons of history and things to do. but essentially it is a more busy and less clean version of Chicago.

Things to do:
- I would check out a Broadway show. It's apparently a big deal. Every one I spoke to that went had a great time (they went with lady friends and not alone).
- Chelsea Piers is awesome.
- Lots of great places to eat. You could eat at America's first pizzeria.
- Tons of museums.
- Central park can be amazingly romantic...
- You can take a bus tour so you can see most of the regular sites quickly and comfortably.
- NYC shopping district is pretty cool to.

Might I strongly recommend the Museum of Sex as well. It was a bit pricey, but very educational and well worth it... I mean they had mannnny sculpture and videos like this:

New York Represent! As a tourist there is an unlimited list of things to do, it also depends what time of the day you're in the city, keep that in mind.

Vegas does have NYC beat for price. But the upscale NYC hotels are awesome. I've stayed at a few of them over the years. There was only one that I was disappointed with: the Helmsley Park Lane, (located around the corner from the Plaza (which is nicer).

Wax museum was a nifty afternoon-killer. I was probably the eight-billionth guest to give the Vulcan hand-signal next to Patrick Stewart. There's always the Metropolitan Museum of Art, too. I usually prefer D.C. for museums, but NYC's not bad. Check out the Village while you're there.

If you wind up in Flushing, let me know. Good eats in there. I'm especially fond of some of the stuff in the Flushing Mall - they've got these Lamb Cumin sandwiches that very tasty, if you don't mind some spice. And this popcorn chicken kind of stuff with a neon orange sauce that's so fatty but so good. Plus, I'm usually a 15 minute drive from Main Street there, and any excuse to kill myself with food is good for me.

I revived this thread cause I just had a fun day in NYC yesterday. My wife's friend had a pair of 6th row tickets to the Broadway show Wicked (at the Gershwin theater for you local New Yawkers). Her friend hurt her back badly the other day and offered us the seats. So my wife and I hopped the train to NY, jumped on the C subway, had a quick bite/drink at the Mexican restaurant/Tequila bar beside the Gershwin, and saw a really good show.

IF the OP is looking for show suggestions, Wicked is a great choice.
