Via Fast Silicon:If you thought that Sony was the only console manufacturer having a really bad day, guess again. After many months of public complaints and outcries, Microsoft has publicly admitted that ALL (as in every single one ever sold) Xbox360’s have a design defect that can lead to their failure. Though Robbie Bach, head of Microsoft’s Xbox360 Division refused to elaborate on the issue, the general consensus is that it’s one of botched thermal design management and inadequate dissipation of heat leading to component failure. All of the nearly 12 million units currently in the hands of consumers are effected. Though Microsoft has not issued a global recall, they have tripled the warranty coverage period, and are expected to have to dole out over $1 Billion to correct the situation.

I was on the fence between 360 & PS3. I had an equal amount of people telling me things about both consoles. People told me there weren't as many games out for PS3 like there is for 360. But I was fine with that because the games that I'm more interested in (sports games) were on PS3. NBA Live 08, Madden 08 (whihc I haven't bought yet), and GT5 is due out. Not to mention Grand Theft Auto is coming. Since I had a PS1 & PS2 in the past, the PS3 controller would be easy to adapt to. I got a PSP for Christmas and bought a PS3 the next day (without knowing I could do remote play). I guess because so many of my coworkers are on COD4 for PS3 kinda helped, but I would have went with PS3 even if they all had it on 360.

Call me a PS fanboy if you want, but I'm just more familiar with the Playstation platforms and I've never been disappointed with their products. Also I wanted a BluRay player and noticed their prices were around $399... Same as a 40gb PS3. I didn't see the purpose of shelling out $399 just to watch Bluray movies when I could shell out $399 and watch Bluray movies AND play games too.

Xbox 360 warranty extended to three years

Posted Jul 5th 2007 5:30PM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: GamingIn a monumental move for Xbox 360 owners everywhere, Microsoft has expanded its warranty coverage to three years, and will take a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge to earnings for anticipated repair costs on the malfunctioning consoles. The company had previously extended the 90 day warranty to one year, but this move comes with a clear acknowledgment of the persistent problems with many of its systems (specifically the red ring of death), and an offer to reimburse users who have already paid for repairs to their consoles. It would appear that this development signals Remond's concession that these problems are not "routine" (a stance it has been lacking as of late), and happily demonstrates that they will do more than just add a few heatsinks to the troubled console. With the recent news that the Xbox 360 has a reported 33 percent failure rate, this should be welcome relief for literally scores of gamers.
