...in the garage.

Started on the mechanical parts of the restoration this weekend.

I had picked up this "shell" from a guy who had intended to do a Velarossa conversion - He failed. However, he did spend a ton of cash on some really cool and rare suspension bits, and full disc-brake conversion, and lots of new OEM parts... So, for my $500 investment, I got all that, and sold a door and some other parts for $400. Not a bad haul for a Benjamin.

As soon as I get the windshield out and the brake M/C and lines off it, it's going for scrap.

Test fitting of the new wheels - Holy OEM ride height, Batman!

Removal of the stock suspension components:

New aftermarket suspension goodies, freshly-painted and assembled, ready to install:

I'll update as the build progresses - So far, so good, and it should be sitting on the new suspension by next weekend.

For now, the stock L24 and 4-speed will suffice (with header and exhaust).

Got a buddy here with an L28 I can stroke to 3.1 and add a lopey cam and maybe some top-end work - N/A screamers FTW.

Looks like a cool project. I can't wait to see it finished.

Pardon my n00bishness on the subject, but I searched around a bit, and still have no idea what a Velarossa conversion is. Care to enlighten me?

"Hmmmm... lopey cams"

I wouldn't car for that conversion - I like the Z's lines as they are! I'll be following this as well - Keep the pics coming!

This definitely is a thread i'm going to follow. Me and a friend are helping out an older neighbor (40 or so yrs old) swap out a seized l28 for another one and probably gonna help him do a lot of other stuff. This thread is definitely good inspiration. I'll be following this one. My neighbors 280z is the same color but it's all sun faded.

Shoulda got those konigs Greg...

That is some super sweet looking suspension stuff you have there, that'll be awesome! I'm thinking a stroked L28 running 11:1 pistons, an old skool magneto, a big cam, full exhaust and triple Webber DCOE....

I hate the ZG. It completley kills the sexy front end of the car

Anyways, its looking sweet.

Thanks all.

I think the Z-car "conversion" kits are dorky as hell - The S30 Z is easily one of the Top Ten most beautiful and functional sports car designs ever penned by ANY designer.

The more I tear into this car, the more I feel like I comprehend what Datsun's engineers and Mr. K had in mind - Simple, functional, and practical, with an eye towards performance.

It's simply a phenomenal design, one that new car manufacturers could take a lesson from.

hate to get off topic but noticed your sig, nice to see another Challenger I found your RX7 to be quite frustrating, somhow you managed to beat my Z31 in concourse, the basic theiory is that a turbo VG in a Z31 is nothing noteworthy, but your rx was still rotary powered and even though my paint wasn't great it was all painted and my engine bay spotless, got any pic's of your underhood? I only managed 16th overall this year but was absolute last minute getting it together and autocrossed on 5 cylinders, the rain drag day I found a dead spark plug

my engine, and if you are familiar with the stock Z31 engine bay you know just how clean that it
