Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

It seems to me that a lot of our threads start out with honest questions from owners that need help and quickly take a downward spiral to where if we were in the same room we'd be coming to blows. Would we really speak to each other this way if our club met in person once a month to talk about our Q's?

Has anyone noticed that there are less threads being started, less responses within most threads and that the long-time members with the most knowledge are posting less?

What's the point of berating members for wanting to do mods that some of us don't care for? How about a "Welcome to NICO friend" type of greeting and point them to the VIP or Engine forums?

I'm not sure that what I'm seeing is the "family forums" culture that Greg tries to promote for NICO and is what sets us apart from most other car forums. If the same name calling and bickering were going on in the General Chat forum there would be some members getting banned.

We all have a lot of knowledge about Q45's. Let's share it instead of arguing about it. A little encouragment goes a long way.

Now that I've pissed everyone off I came up with a way to beat inflation and keep the refrigerator full. No takers yet by standing in front of my house but next week I'm heading to the nearest freeway offramp to drum up some work. Sooner or later a Q45 has got to pass by.

Well this forum has become a wonderful thread if you need help. Anything fun that you want for your car the way you want it has become hideous. I don't even post things that would just to have someone hinder me and I suggest that to others. Everybody wants their car their way. I know that things have to put to perspective. Some MODS can't be done and or not practicable to have on your Q. But hey to each it's own. Suggestions are great to people that listen and take the advise. To someone that would make people proud if their posession to be just bieng told to a must have OEM spec. Look at different Forums, people have fun and disscuss fun things and appreciate others.

Then again this is an open to everyones ideas and thoughts.

Cheers and Bring the fun back to the forum.

You're right.

I think it's largely due to not having a full time Moderator here to greet noobs and start the threads off right. Very often the first reply determines weather the thread will be a bash thread or a nice, helpful one.

I've been reading some old posts and one thing I noticed in them is that if WES was not the first replier he was there shortly after. We need more decent mods to be involved in the discussions to "MODERATE".

I always try to post constructive replies to threads as often as possible. Too often of late there have been too many replies of " that is against the clean air act so I'm not going to tell you how to do it OR allow anyone to post how to do it....",.

I get tired of someone telling me that I can't put a different motor in my car because some BS law the politicians came up with says I can't. (I can just imagine some of the reples I would get to my AWD Q project )

If I ask how to put a Bell/Rolls Royce T250/T63 helicopter turbine in my car I don't want the only posted replies to be "that's illegal", I'm posting the thread in the first place for primarily information on how to do it and secondarily on other members opinions of the idea.

The legality of it is strictly between me and the law.

If you think its a bad idea fine, but how would you do it if it was something that you didn't think was a bad idea?

Don't just refuse to help me by hiding behind comments regarding legality.

If I can't get the help I need from here I'll go somewhere else, and I'm sure that new members will do the same.

Too often of late I've helped someone out locally and in mentioning NICO in conversation I've received a far too common reply of "those guys are d!ck".

This is not something to be proud of.

Yes catering to the lowest common denominator and no child left behind is a great way to run a school.

Failing to expect high standards and demanding rigorous homework is a sure way to please the majority.

Being a d!ck is a great compliment, as we are not running for faternity president or are we?

"The legality of it is strictly between me and the law"

Not true - failure to report a crime, adding in the commission of a crime, or conspiracy [aka public discussion] is a crime if you aid and abet it. PLUS a permanent record of all conspirators is available for ever.

Can you imagine anyone [sane person] who would not disavow any participation in a crime.

Conspiracy is agreement between persons to break the law in the future, in some cases having committed an act to further that agreement .

The person who aids and abets participates in the commission of a crime by performing some Overt Act or by giving advice or encouragement. He or she must share the criminal intent of the person who actually commits the crime, but it is not necessary for the aider and abettor to be physically present at the scene of the crime.

An aider and abettor is a party to a crime and may be criminally liable as a principal, an Accessory before the fact, or an accessory after the fact.

If we tell you how [special knowledge] or encourage you to commit a Federal crime we are as guilty as you are.

The problem is most people don't consider the Federal Clean Air Acts as criminal or civil offenses when in fact they are serious violations.

If one's car is primarliy an expression of one's personality, one doesn't need to come here for affirmation of their decorating schemes.

If one wants their car to function as well as it can, then this is a great place to learn. Rebuilding a great Q45 is different than just decorating one. It's facts vs. personal tastes. Function vs. fashion.

Goody you make some extremely valid points. Also to add, that you have went out your way to help me with a problem that I am going to tackle tomorrow. I had some more work done to the car and will have the control arms changed on Wednesday of next week.

I am new here so I didn't want to be the first one to point this out. I think a lot of us enjoy coming to this forum for various reasons. I for one, like to see a balance of humor and constructive assistants. A forum has to my knowledge been a place where members are the best advisor's of that subject and not some one saying; (unknown mechanic at dealership) give me $85 to run a test, just to say what we can learn here.

When the post start getting personal and others degrade others for their lack of knowledge it defeats the purpose of joining.

[QUOTE=Q45tech]Yes catering to the lowest common denominator and no child left behind is a great way to run a school.

Well said....do we really need to rehash the most basic questions over and over on a daily basis like "will removing my muffler or cats give me more horsepower, or a kool sound" There is a vast wealth of knowledge stored here that goes in depth covering all the basic and most of the advanced things an inexperienced owner could ever want to learn....all they need to do is want it bad enough to spend some time studying old posts and topics.

To cater to "the lowest common denominator" clogs the board with kindergarten level information{and tons of misinformation in recent posts} and pretty soon the forum sinks to the level where the more experienced posters get bored and leave...then you are left with something that resembles the 240sx or worse yet almost any honda forum......A bunch of kiddies discussing LED lights, mufflers, stereos, wheels, and how "fast" {not} their cars are

Go back and look at the nature, quality and content of most posts from a few years ago and compare to the most recent posts and you can see the shift progress. What we are experiencing is the normal lifecycle of the Q45 as it ages and becomes a cheaper and cheaper car to purchase-and the resulting demographics of its new owners reflected in the content and tone of the forum. Growing pains or death?

I have to agree, I used to post more and also read more but so many threads degrade into something that has nothing to do with the original posters issue. And slamming a new guy for not searching, when often it results in too many results.

For years I loved http://www.z31.com, AZHitman was there early on, but that turned into a gang-banger site that just used street language and wasn't anymore help.

I fixed up my Dad's older 92 to keep it running for the 6 months I had it and my 97' has been getting help since this board was on Yahoo! I hope that this can stay "adult" and helpful, as my 97' gets towards middle age (even though I still think of it as a new car, given I have a 1984 300zx sitting next to it in the garage) and I hope to get the right help to punch another 50-100k great miles out of it.

Good points!

If the thread doesn't relate, or is something ya can not relate to on a + level,,,,

Well just leave it ALONE, DO NOT RESPOND, IGNORE and respond to the ones that you can relate to.

What could possibly be simpler?

Life is way to short for that BS.

Problem is the river quickly becomes polluted without a gameplan in place to protect it.

Every business/group/college/social network, etc has a "tone" that defines it and attracts members/customers with similar attributes and strengthens it...niche marketing and catering to the groups values/tastes tends to attract and retain people of common bonds. Disregarding the tone, or values that built the business/group/network,etc in order to appeal to the masses erodes the very essence of what attracted and retained the core group of people.... effort expended trying to be everything for everybody backfires and you become nothing to everyone.

What does this forum want to be? Up til now it has been a high level, technical based source of knowledge shared among a well educated, adult, group of enthusiast owners helping to maintain their Q.

What is the future of the forum....more of the same? Young kids discussing{increasingly in gibberish text form or poor english} fartcans and bodykits like most kidde honda forums? Very difficult to be both as stated above.

Some restaurants require a coat & tie others just require shirt and shoes, Teams have uniforms, colleges have SAT requirements...all in an effort to attract and retain the core people they have defined as their market by being exclusive.

Full of ****? maybe....but thats my 2 cents

Sorry but the next couple of lines might be a little confusing for some.

Going under the premise of your post you could easily be attributed to aiding and abbetting in a conspiracy to commit terrorism if you told someone who asked "at what gap does a spark plug burn the hottest". if said person was to use said information to conspire/construct a weapon with the intention of committing an act of terrorism. Or would my understanding of your previous post not be as open to interpretation as it seems.

I just don't think that its right for someone to be thrown into the same lot as real criminals, just because they like seeing different drive trains in different cars.

Just my $0.02, no more posts from me after this concerning anything outside of technical info/questions or greetings.

I'll leave the rest to you guys, its your forum, you're just kind enough to let me visit it/post in it.

And I apologize if I rocked the boat too much, hopefully no one fell out.

Well the environmentists{which I am not, but probobly should be} would say you dont have the right to trash the air/water quality for everyone by ignoring automotive anti pollution laws designed to protect society. I certainly wouldnt want to have a home on well water near a neighbor who ignores the laws and dumps his used oil in his wooded backyard .

Then you would be ignorant of the federal laws, and ignorance is no defense in a court of law.

We tend to not cultivate ignorance here like many other automotive sites. Precisely why we have value here (especially up to 3 or 4 years ago when all the high school harrys came on board) and those other sites mostly don't. But then in those days the first thing a new member would do would be to read all the old posts (a lot less flotsam) to learn all they could so they could participate and contribute intelligently to the discussion.

How often does that happen now? We (the old guys) can tell by the newbie's posts. It's extremely rare, but not extinct, thank goodness.

^ I can do what ever the hell I want with my car as long as I don't drive it on public roads.

The laws made are laws pertaining to public roads. If I want to build a car for Racing and only drive it on the track I have the right to do so.

And for the rest I just don't care.

Like I posted before only Greetings or tech related posts will be made by me from now on, if at all.

Now now,

The think you have to realize about Maxnix and Q45Tech and other senior members is that they seem to be very smart and have lots of good information (esp. Q45 Tech) but they are somewhat lacking in social graces. You just have to deal with it. . . it's part of life. Don't take Brian's charming posts too seriously or you might end up killing yourself .

First off, I'd like to apologize for my inactivity.. The Q gods hate me right now, I am not being with my bread and butter and my Q has a bunch of annoying issues.. We'll get that later!

Heres what I dont understand... No one is forcing you to say anything, so if theres nothing constructing being said, why say it? IT doesnt help anything!

I am going to try and be a bit more active!!!

I was really hoping that since we are dealing with a slightly older demographic that if I or anyone "in charge" was gone for any length of time that maybe we'd be able to handle ourselves so we can share the same sandbox.

If it comes down to deleting posts and stuff that have no relevant content, so be it!
