Last night I got out of work late & drove my, almost hour long, commute home. It was about 12:30 when I pulled in, I was tired & was gathering my stuff together. My stuff, including my purse (which had my key fob, house keys, wallet, phone & everything else I might possibly need in an emergency ) was on my passenger side, so I got out & went to walk around & unlock my passenger side to retrieve my stuff. Well the door was locked, walked back to the drivers side & that was locked too!! I must've accidently hit the lock button as I was getting out of the car. As luck would have it my spare key was in a purse I had lent to my sister a while back & just hadn't yet gone to pick it up. So I had to drive (in our other car obviously) almost an hour to get my spare key fob, then an hour back home. I was pissed. It was almost 3 am by the time I got back home.

I just cancelled my AAA membership maybe 2 months back, bc the car is new & there's no need for it. I was telling my gf who has a A/C also & she said I could've called Roadside Assistance that we have on our car & they would've unlocked it. I didn't even think about it bc we have the smart key, but thinking about it now, there is a lock so if your battery in key fob burns out you can use the key inside of it.

Anyhow I have 2 questions about this, that I was wondering if anyone knew:

1) Would our Nissan Roadside Assistance have come out to unlock the car? & would they have been able to?

2) Why the hell does our "smart" key let you lock it inside the car??? --Yet it will not let you lock your key inside the trunk! Bc 1 time when I was going out I stuck my purse in the trunk for safe keeping & had my key fob in my pocket, but had my spare key fob in my purse & the trunk kept popping back open when I tried to shut it. It would not let me close the trunk w/ the key fob inside.

sucks that that happened, at least the car wasn't running tho! (i know 3 different people who have had that happen lol)

no idea about your first question, but i've tried to lock the fob in my car every way possible, and the car won't do it. even when i physically lock the car, leave the key in, and close the door, the lock pops back open.

i do have a friend who bought a 2008 2.5SL sedan when it came out, and it is possible for the key to be locked in his car, and trunk as well. (tested this myself.)

so ... the only thing i can think of is that nissan changed their firmware from when the ikey was first introduced to prevent the key from being locked inside the car. or maybe the door position switch / lock position switch on your car is broken.

I left my key in the cup holder today. Went to lock it, i got the error beep. Wouldn't let me do it and I also felt like an a** opening the car to get my key.

Anyone ever get out and forget to turn off the car, lock the car and stop about 5 steps away from the car to turn it off cause you forgot it was on ???

for those of you that use the button on the door to lock the car, a buddy of mine mentioned that that does not arm the security system (i haven't confirmed this yet).

and yes i have done that, but only on purpose

A friend of mine (who drives a G35) has said the same thing. Haven't a clue if it's right or not. Still use the door button to lock my car.

Im not able to lock it in the car, but having AAA PLUS membership is a MUST HAVE IMO...

I used it this week, when my car needed to be towed 70 miles... AAA would have covered like 10 miles or something, AAA PLUS covers upto 100 miles.

Its like insurance, hopefully you never need it, but when you do, you are glad you have it. The tow would have cost me around $350, instead, it was free.

You are right about that. lol I would not have been happy if the car was running the whole time!! It may be something that is broken or just switched off, since my trunk doesn't allow it. That makes me feel better that most of you guys said your car will not lock w/ fob inside.

Take it from me, you'd have felt like a bigger a$$ if your car did actually lock w/ the key inside. **case-in-point** lol

Actually, I don't think that's true, but not positive. The other day I was outside doing yardwork & had my windows down. I walked over to my car to get my sunglasses & the doors were locked, so I reached in to unlock it & the alarm went off. & 9 times out of 10 the only way I lock/unlock my car is using the button on the door handle. There is a possibilty this was one of the 1/10 times I had actually locked it using the actual key fob. But I think it prob still activates the alarm.

I'm gonna call the dealership to ask a few things so I'll find out what they say about this too.

I have locked my keys in the car twice since I've had the car. There has also been a few times where I have almost locked my keys in but the doors unlocked

You can lock your keys/purse in the trunk, you just need to do it in a certain order. My wife and I do it when we go and play VB/Softball.

You need to have a fob in your pocket (me) and the fob in the purse. Leave the car unlocked and throw the purse in the trunk and close the trunk, no issues. Then...walk over to the button on the door and hit it, or lock from the fob. As long as the car is still unlocked the trunk won't give you issues, once the trunk is closed, lock the car from the outside and there you go!

I have never heard of the doors automatically unlocking when you manually push the button on the inside...and I am glad they don't! (or hope they don't). Imagine the same situation of storing the purse in the trunk...I lock the door manually and close it and walk away. As I shut the door the car unlocks and I have just put a "STEAL ME" sign on my car to any of the bums walking down the road checking door handles. Plus, I THINK you can't file a Stolen Car claim if you leave the keys in an unlocked car...so you would be "lending" your car to the bum too!!!!!!!!

Ohhhh...interesting! Makes sense. I'll have to keep that in mind!

I talked to the Dealership & this is what I was told.

1) Yes, Road Side Assistance would come out to open the car door. This is what we pay for.

2) The car should not allow the key to be locked inside. I have to take mine in tomorrow morning for them to look at it.

3) Yes, locking it using the button on the door handle does activate the alarm.

I'll let you know what the dealership says, but given that your car has almost locked but then opened you might have issues there too.

Once I forgot my fob in the pocket of my jeans and threw them in the trunk, the car wouldn't let the trunk close and beeped like you described.

Another time, I was trying to show how this worked to a friend and I ended up locking the fob in the trunk.

Generally it knows when the fob's in the car, but it's not sensitive enough to be 100%

That sucks brianna. I know I've done what Jay did a couple of times with the trunk and locked the door once with the fob in it. Luckily for me the window was down

So went to the Dealership today & they couldn't duplicate the problem. So they had me buy 2 new batteries for my key fob- bc 1 of them was low (it shows a low key code on the screen) but they couldn't figure out which one??!! (Seriously?? just put them each in the car seperately...but whatever) They said a low battery in the key fob could make the car do funny things?? (Even though I told them I didn't even have the key w/ the low battery w/ me when it happened) & that was it...they couldn't re-create it, so they said Sorry! & sent me home. Wow, glad I wasted 3 hours watching daytime television sitting in the Dealership, just for them to tell me they don't know why it did it. Guess I'll just have to remember to at least grab my purse before I get out to go retrieve my things from the passenger side.

If it allows you to lock the key in, it should, by definition of proximity, allow you to unlock the doors as well. It's only a sensor like high-end elevators. If it's inside, it should be un-lockable. I don't know how this happened but kind of blows.

I believe your owners manual says if the fob is more than 31 inches away from the start button then so sad to bad. If you have a lot of stuff in your purse then I can see where it might not detect it. I believe I also read that it will not let you lock it in your trunk and there is a warning if you leave the fob on the dash or in the side pocket of your door -- it cannot distinguish if it is inside or outside the vehicle so it may allow you to lock the doors.

If the key fob is inside the car, it should not let you lock the car from the outside with the outside button. If you open the door while sitting in the car and then use the push button power lock on the door inside armrest, the doors will then lock even with the fob in the car. Maybe you did this and then got out and shut the door, locking the fob in the car.

I went to Home Depot the other day to buy some landscape timbers. When I came out my trunk wouldn't unlock. I had to load them in the passenger door. I knew I done something to the car I shouldn't have, but couldn't figure out what. Once I got home I realized that I must have accidently hit the fob overide switch for the trunk putting something in the glove compartment earlier in the day. I can't imagine owning an A/C without an Owner's Manual. I must refer to it at least twice a week. Unfortunately by the time I finally know all the little tricks with the fob and hidden switches my A/C will have 250,000 miles on it and it will be time to trade it in and relearn what will probably be a completely new bag of tricks for the next car.

Yeah, it definitely says something along those lines...

There was a thread over on nissanclub a while ago about certain "dead spots" in the car that would allow you to lock the key inside the car.

Also, the low battery warning on the dash isn't too accurate. The battery in the key has to be nearly drained for it to pop up.

My altima did the same thing. I was out waxing the car today and I decided while the wax was drying, to try and find a place inside the car where I could put the keys and lock them in, but it was to no avail

Ive left my keys in the cupholders and attempted to lock the car with them in the car, usually after the gym. It literally will not let me lock the car with the keys inside. Just beeps like crazy and doors stay unlocked.

Its like HEY your keys are inside dummy

it is possible to lock your keys in your car. before closing your door manually lock the car from the inside, the part where the handle is. after that close the door. the keys should be locked in your car. i do this all the time when i go surfing and just take a spare ive made cuz cant really take the fob in the water.

You...me...EVERYONE! Now...who locks there's remotely? A lot of people. You are still manually pushing the button, Automatic Locks is really a failed term.

But, I push the botton on the side of my car...because that is easier then pulling out my keys...so I guess I went from always remotely to now always dirrectly...
