At a certain price point, people choose luxury over build quality. This is why Acura is a brand relegated to the sidelines of luxury, while Cadillac leaps ahead (it was the #1 selling luxury brand in 1999, to my surprise).
Honda/Acura know how to make great cars. But fail at impressing upscale buyers.
This is also why the S-class and the new techno-glitz BMWs are hot sellers. When you get to about $60k (the STS can hit $59k optioned) theres sometimes a point where impressing others or the driving experience itself outweighs all else. The Acura RL never hit that price point. I guess you could call it "practical luxury" -- I call it "Why dont you just get an Accord with leather and a sunroof, you moron?"
At a certain price, I start expecting any of the following: eight cylinders, style, size, comfort, power sent to the rear wheels, and maybe brand cachet. Cadillac at least had the style, the awesome Northstar, and the brand heritage.
My folks, for example, pay cash for their cars and trade in regularly. Long term quality really doesnt matter since they never put over 70k on a vehicle before calling it old.
Infiniti started following the path of Acura in the late 90s -- the end result is excellent automobiles without much appeal. Thank goodness they stopped going down that route.
