In the process of adding performance to my 240. It's about 50/50 where I see negative and positive comments towards having one. Yes I have emissions (live in NY) however I know a shop where my emissions wont be checked. Talk to me here, pros and cons??

Pros - Sounds better, makes more noise (if you're into that kind of thing), and adds a bit of a performance increase considering the freer flow.
Cons - Not really much if you don't give a crap about the environment and can get around emissions.

You won't really see any performance gains.
Your car will just stink more and sound raspier.

Truth. I let my friend borrow my cat for emissions a while ago, so I have a test pipe on right now. Too lazy to go under there and change it back, but I should.....

Performance wise, I feel no difference whatsoever. I have an intake, headers, and hks hi-power.

Its just really loud, and it pops sometimes, and smells like a lawnmower.

Yeah. I'd personally just go with a high flow cat. Still get a good sound and it doesn't smell like a**.

^^

This.

The only benefit you will really see is a very slight change in sound, maybe. If you can register a performance gain using your butt, between a properly working cat, and a test pipe, you are lying to yourself.

There are many cheaper and easier ways of making power.

So I went ahead and bought a test pipe. Guess the only way to know is if I personally try it out. What is the difference between resonated and non resonated?

FACEPALM! I have a 3" Catback exhaust and 3" test pipe, and with the test pipe i didnt notice any power gains, BUT my car sounds alot better with it on (not more raspier), and I LOVE THE SMELL DIFFERENCE... Why because racecar...!

Because slow daily driver? Its kind of pointless. Its just loud for no reason and still slow.

Now if it was a KA-T, that changes things a little.

(I'm not talking about you personally I'm just talking about KAs in general)

I have a high flow cat on my KA-T setup.
The engine spools and pulls the same.

People should stop being ricers and pretend a catalyst is going to do anything for their slow KAs.

We wouldn't have fuel injected 5.0L making over 400HP that get 25mpg if it weren't for emissions.

Hi flow cat, resonator, nice Magnaflow muffler. Ooh. I'm getting chills thinking about how nice that'd sound.

Get a high flow car. Test pipes are dumb unless your turbo'd and need the breather. You r car will stink, you'll give drivers behind you a headache, and a bigger carbon footprint :(

I'll be going turbo, keeping my high flow cat.

Typical comment from a 15 year old.

Its kids like you that give automotive culture such a bad face in the eyes of most people, lawmakers included. There are many people working very hard to keep what we do alive and legal. We need to remember that these problems aren't going away, and we will always have go coexist with regular car owners and the gov. Yet all you can say is F*** emissions?

Find a new hobby, and quit screwing it up for everyone else.

You're forgetting about the whole "making power" thing. I swear it does close to nothing man.

Buy some S14 cams instead.

I bought a test pipe for my KA about 2 years ago, due to a clogged cat. I noticed a little bit of a performance difference (I also installed intake, headers, and 3" exhaust when this was put on) but I doubt the test pipe had anything to do with it. As far as the cost of a test pipe compared to the cost of a new cat...hands down the test pipe is the way to go. Plus, unless I shoot a piston out of my now KA-T, there is no concern of clogging it back up. If your going for a cost effective way to replace the cat than the test pipe is the way to go.

Well no s*** a cat is going to cost a lot more, precious metals, not a chunk of mild steel.

Anyways, you shouldn't be clogging up cats that fast either...

I honestly think my cat was better than my test pipe for performance and backpressure reasons. as far as my test pipe on my car now I got it for free cheap and made 200$ of the two cats I had so....test pipe = profit

Ian said it all.

Just put a damn mother-effing catalytic converter on and call it a day. You don't notice any power differences, your car won't smell like bootie, and you'll be a good kid. Doesn't make ANY sense to me why people buy test pipes. Yeah, they're cheaper, but they're illegal.
