pretty sure my tension rods are the culprit. I installed new tie rods, swaybar end links and tension rods all at the same time. makes a knock/clunk every time there is a sudden forward/backward weight transfer, like at a slow roll tapping the brakes makes the noise the worst. I've had the front end in the air to shake pull and bang on everything to see were there is some excess play. the tension rods are the only component that sound loose when tapped with a dead blow hammer.

There seems to be too much play in two areas that concern me, each can be fixed for close to the same price. I can replace either the front power brace or the rods.

I don't know what kind of tension rods I have b/c they were given to me with the car, but there adjustable with spherical ends, they're the tein green color but I don't think there tein's. tThere's some play at the spherical end where I can hold the ball part and it taps as I pull it up and down. There is also quite a bit of play where the front bolt goes through the front brace. Anyone know how much play is normal and which might cause all the noise. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post

you shure its the tention rod and not the lower balljoint on the controll arm?..sometimes when you lower a car..it ruins the dynamics of the suspention and puts allot of stress on the ball joints cousing them to fail earlyer than normal..snap some pics with the tire off for us so we can get a better look.

Thats certainly possible, but the car was dropped probably a year before I swapped the tie rod/ tension rod and end links. It never made a sound until right after all that. I'll check it out either way. 220k I'm sure they could use replacing.

got under there again today, ball joints look pretty damn good, no dry rot or cracking of any kind and they seem pretty solid.

as for the tension rod, I've got probably close to 1mm of play in the ball end. anyone know what kind of tolerance there should be?

the way i know it is .. smallest loose in a spherical bearing = replacement .. well that's how we do it in the aviation buisiness

those problems can be tricky .. my s13 had no loose @ all and tires balanced 2 times and i still have a slight steering wheel shimmy

i've given up on front end suspension mysteries

masterdisaster have you tryed seeing if the frount rotars are warped? warped brake rotars will cause a sterring wheel viberation.
