Post

Hey everyone! First off I would like to say that I am a general car enthusiast. I enjoy all cars, I do not bash anyone's ride. I have driven Honda's since I started driving (I'm 26). I currently own a 2006 Honda Civic Si coupe. I love the car, handles nice, has good power for a 2.0, fun to drive, but I am looking for a change. Honda is all I know, but as of late, Honda hasn't really been "competing." I was looking into an S2000, but it just isn't practical to me. I am thinking about making the jump from Honda to a G35 coupe/ 350Z. I really don't know much about the G35 coupe except that they look great, sound good, and pretty quick. I am looking to make the jump within the next year or so... I will be getting a used G35 ($20K budget). My questions for you G35 owners: What year(s) is the best/worse? What should I look for when buying a used G35 coupe? What are the most common problems (if any)? Do you consider the G35 reliable? I am just looking for a little guidance, I have been reading the forums, and it seems like you are a good group. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!

Welcome to Nico!!!We bought my son a used 89 civic SI for his first car ($1500) years ago. Was very impressive!!! He totaled it hitting a curb in the HS parking.....we had lowered it with Eibach springs, so bent the front sub-frame. I bought a used 04 G35 with 44k miles on it 1 year ago. Love it!!You will be told here to buy the newest/lowest mileaage G you can afford. They only get better. Some will say the 03/04 manual was week, but the autos were solid.03's had some brake/tire issues being the first year.carsdirect.com is a good source to compare all years on one screen.

Good luck!!! Others will chime in.

We all love FURD.

To te op. As they mentioned get the newest possible. All yeatrs are good no major issue. However the 03,04 had the brake dust issue and the headunit fail. Both easy fix.

I'd suggest a search. I've gone through the specifics IN DETAIL too many times to type them again.

Highlights:

05, larger brakes, less transmission issues, better head unit.

Oil consumption on manual transmission G's (trade off is higher power).

06, Bluetooth and projector head lights

07 Rear Active Steer.

Welcome to NICO!

Get the newest G35 you can afford. I also recommend the 05+. The good outweighs the bad IMO.

The only thing that anyone ever needs to know about the G35 is that it gets a lot of looks from the ladies...

I'll put it this way:

If the ugly duckling drove a G, he'd still be ugly... but he'd have a flock of ladies begging to get with him...

LOL get it? Duck... flock of ladies... haha OHHH man!

This is a rumor I've heard. I have found it has not cured the ugly and fat syndrome yet. Still holding out hope.

The only time I remember this definitely happening was one night after dinner. My wife and I were driving separate cars and a little jailbait girl almost jumped in my coupe.

Why couldn't I have had my G when I was 15? lol We'll disregard the fact that the G35 didn't come out until I was 17-18...

Note: InfinitiGkid is still very young....

2003/2004 were still nice, but the 2005+ you have the REVUP engine as an option. 2007+ you can get the HR motor (in the sedan).

2005+ had a revised interior which is better.

2003/2004 came with BREMBO brakes for the SPORT package.

Non-Revup engines (sedan & coupe) were basically the same HP rating.

I have a 05' G-35 coupe, 40K miles, I just put an HKS exhaust system, which made it true dual. It has more pickup and it made a difference in the sound, it still does not sound like a ricer.

Have you ever drove one?

The only advantage you will get from the G-35 compared to the 350z is a back seat.

I have a 2008 xs. Of the 40 some odd cars I have had it has been the most unreliable one of the bunch.

Another thing to think about. If you are over 6' tall, and plan on track days/autox, you will want a Z. The G's lack the head room. I am 6'3 and my head almost hits the head liner. And this is w/ a slight recline on the seat to where it is comfy, but not Gangsta.

But my friends Z I have no headroom issues. And that is w/ the seat sitting straight up. (proper postion for track use)

This is sadly very true. I'm 6'3 and wearing a helmet for track events is murder because of the angle the seat must be reclined to make up for the added 2 inches of foam. G's with a moonroof have even less room in them than mine.

The g35 coupe has to be the best car ever made. I was on a max of $20K and I found a 05 with nav and 39Kmi at the local dealer. A friend of mine has a 08 with high rev. My red line is 6,200. His is 7,500. Wow what a difference. He let me drive and when I flooded it in the shift to 2nd it burned a patch of rubber 10 feet long.At the time I could not afford a new one and from this web site there are performance up grades to bring a 05 up and over the power of a 08 without paying $10-$15K more for a newer model.Welcome to the forum and I am new also with big plans for my G and I hope you do to.

you have an 05 coupe? The standard engine has a redline of 6600rpm with fuel cutoff at 6800. The 08 has fuel cut off at 7700, but if I had one I would never rev past 7300 since the peak HP is at 6800 for the 3.5 and 7000 for the 3.7, and shifts drop revs into the low 5 area, at peak torque output.

Seriously? I haven't had half the problems Pfarmer has and I still know the G is far from the best ever made. Hell, I enjoyed driving my I30 more than my G coupe.

Sadly, I saw an 03 with just over 100k for $12,999 My coupe is now KBBing for $15,900 I believe. Damned economy.

Yeah just $4-$5k hahaha. I actually can't think of just bolt ons that would boost peak HP 28 ponies.

i will have my 2005 G35x for a offically a year aug 4th and have had zero problems... and i drive it hard. i brought my G35x with 18k and now have 45k in a little over 11 months... the car has been nothing but a dream so far...

my only grip would be the break dust on the front wheels... but thats because the 2005 G35x has the 03-04 brakes still... i will be switching pads next brake service and that grip will be gone...

+1 get the newest year you can afford!!!!! and dont Rice the G35 out with a fart can or VENTS

Plenum Spacer, HFC and MD exhaust with a tune and I guarantee you get more than 28 HP. Especially if you have REV-UP and get a MREV2.

A supercharger could be considered a 'bolt on'.

Sorry bro, no ricer math here. MD exhaust with straight pipes was yielding 16 hp (not even sure where in the power band, but let's just say up top).

So 296. Plenum spacer might get you another 3-5 up top, but usually yield power in the midrange. A tune might do something, but pushing 12+ hp on the top end? I no dink so.

We're talking about the non-rev up DE. If it was the rev-up all we would have to make up is 8 hp. Not so hard.

What would occur if the greatest benefit for the exhaust was at 4500 and a ME spacer was used on an 05 rev up? Would you simply add the 16 hp for the exhaust to the +12 to +15 for the spacer. Or if the benefit of the exhaust was at 5500 would you simply add +9 to +13 for the spacer?

Stock DE's are putting down around 210 rwhp. With a plenum spacer, HFC and MD exhaust + tune you will EASILY be pushing 240 to the wheels. Most people with that are in the 250-260 range.

You have not done enough research.

When I get my car tuned next week (maybe the following week actually) I'll post up the dynos for you to look at. 28 HP is not that hard to get.

Sasha has the tuned long tube headers and claims 35 hp with just the headers + tune. Of course, those are ridiculous @ $2200 for just the headers.
