ok, this might not be the right place to ask this kind of question since it is a 240 website. i own a 93 240sx 5spd. the motor blew up about a month ago in flood water. i had planned on getting an sr20det when i saved the money over the next three or four months. my car has several dime size dents in it and needs a new hood and front bumper (has fiberglass bodykit bumper that broke) the interior is stained pretty badly and has and horrible smell. i've owned it for about a 1.5 years and loved to drive it, exept for all the well known 240 problems. here is my question, should i keep my car and get an sr20det with all the goodies for 300-350hp or should i sell it and get a loan for a different car. the cars i've been looking into but not sure about is a 3rd generation rx7, a 93 or newer supra, or a mitsubishi 3000gt. a 3000gt is heavy but i would only get the vr-4 model which has 320hp factory. the rx7 is known for having apex seal problems and burning oil (255hp),and i havent found any problems with supras exept there a little more expensive(320hp). any opinions would be great for these cars or any others you could think of. and of course any extra money i would have after my car payment i would use to fix up a new car.

well your only selling a shell as your motor is blown right? so you'll only get about a 1000 at best for your car...

maybe you could rebuild your ka and go turbo? or get a sr and go that way. you also should consider what insurance is going to be on those other cars. i know insurance isnt cheap for the supra...

Don't those supras still go for a lot of cash? I thought they were like double the asking price of the other cars you listed. They were 40k new right? that was part of the problem with them in the first place and a cause for them being discontinued. Ah, but the are so nice...

Those are all great cars, and each will have it's own problems as they age. The RX7's were plagued with a lot more problems than you listed and are fairly expensive to modify. The supra is a great car, but cost and insurance should be looked into. Some insurance companies won't even insure the targa top supra with anything less than a perfect driving record. The 3000GT VR-4 doesn't have a very good aftermarket backing, so it will be somewhat challenging and expensive to modify. And they are deffinately the worst handling of those three cars. It all depends on which you would be happy with, and in my case that would be any of these. Just do a lot of research before you decide, and when you think you're ready to buy, do some more research!:icon18

Well, you're 240 sounds like an expensive reclamation project. You gotta decide if it's worth putting in that kind of serious money nto a car that will not be worth the money you put into it. Based on what you said, I'd say it probably isn't worth it.

All 3 of the cars you list are good cars but are going to be far more expensive to keep/maintain and insure than your old 240, so brace yourself. The Supra is probably going to be the most reliable of the three. The RX-7 probably the most expensive to repair, but most fun to drive. The 3000GT will seem to be a notch below the other in most categories. Personally if I were in your shoes, I'd look at a 300ZX before the other 3, which I'm surprised you did not include. Same class of vehicle, same performance, as good reliability as the Supra (assuming it was maintained well)Just a thought

dont bother with the 3000Gt VR-4. how does a $6k transmission sound. and thats not a one time thing, you'll be replacing those more often than not. and yes the Rex has lots more problems than just the seals and oil, which i think is cause by the bad seals. they were known for burning lean at high rpms, slightly over heating, and bad emissions. plus they are gas guzzlers. but they're fun to dirve. but unless you know a rotary, i wouldnt suggest getting one. maybe look into an 87 turbo 2 rex. and the supra is nice, but expensive to mod, and like stated expensive to insure. i'd keep the 240 and get a rebuilt KA. do a little work on it, nothing major as you'll prolly end up switching it later. use what money you have left over, and it will be a bit cause the KA isnt too expensive, and clean and repair the car. get it back to good condition so it lasts long enough for an SR.

Why not a 300ZX N/A?Or an Mr.2 (if you don't need to move more than one passenger and a briefcase)?

Or more from the sporty-coupe section: Eclipse/Talon/Celica/Prelude/Paseo(uck!)/Probe(uck!)/MX-6(uck engine!)?

There are so many cars out there...

As for the 3000GT/Stealth, it isn't _that_ heavy (compared to a 300ZX -- I haven't looked at Supra stats lately) unless, of course, you get the VR4/AWD option. (Heck, a non-stripped/non-option-delete S13 240SX is not exactly a "light weight" car either.)

I was going to get one (3000GT N/A), but after discovering all the engine problems that plauged the cars and learning that the maintainance cost and insurance would be more than I was willing to pay, I looked elsewhere.(I like how they look [on the outside] more than a Supra though... :-)

the rx-7 is one of the sexiest cars out there.. but was like stated before.. "plagued" with the rotary engine that was never perfected.. evrey 80k u have to rebuild it and has maney other problems..

your kinda in compelty diffrent catagories with the supra, rx7 .. then go to 3000gt or 240sx.. supras cost 40k new and i would love you to find one turbo or not for under 17k with lower then 70k miles on it.. the hold there value insanily..

dude u can get the cracked fiberglass kit repaired wicked easy.. drop the sr20det in there and get a carbon hood..

dont get a 3kgt, my friend has one its a piece. lets say u want to replace the spark plugs-save up 800 dollars cuz the entire engine compartment has to be evacuated, 750$ in labor for that job. they are unreliable and gay, the awd is tight, but the turbos are small and dont push much past 320 stock hp. the 3ztt is your best bet, one of my other friends has one and its a great car, easily tunable, high potential, and sexy as hell-plus its a nissan :) get a 3z

the only problems with the Z is the fact that the engine is REALLY crammed in there and they over heat cause of it. they're also heavy, but that can be fixed. but the engine is the main problem with them. id get an N/A one with a blown engine and slap an SR in there.

get a supra. Check out my webpage for some convincing. I am getting one sometime next spring. http://www.xanga.com/fastimportsI have considered the rx7, but I am scared of apex seals, thought about the vr4, but Its hard to run 10's very fex do, and the zx, great car, but I just love supras. Plus the supra is the best for highway racing.

3000GT VR-4:~$15ktranny problems (my friend blew his first time at the track)they WILL put you in the back of your seat cause they are damn fast

FD RX-7:~13-18krotary problems (need to do plenty of preventative maintainence)also awesome, awesome cars...

Supra:$20-25kcompletely overpriced and overdonestill damn good cars

sr20 swap:$4-6k swapsay $2000 in fixing problems or upgrading old parts and suspensiontotal $8kpretty unique and fast car (though becoming more trendy)only real problem is its old and not a true sports car in the same sense as the others

true, but its not light for its size. its not that big of a car, yet weighs the same as a supra. lightened, it would be very quick. im not saying its so heavy that you'd need tons of power to get it moving, but its heavy for its size.

between the supra being insanely overpriced and high insurance, and the 3kGT's build quality and aftermarket support (insurance highs too) and the constant rebuilds of the rx7 and its rotary, i would say, stick with the 24o for now, u never know whats gonna happen down the line.

they are all about the same dimensions, also remember that the nissan tt 300zx was the first tt production car of all the options up top, and it came 3 years before the rx-7 and a year before the vr4. and if the only thing you can say is bad about the z32 is that the ec is small, thats pretty good compared to the other options...

i'd stick with the 40. completely tub the thing. gat a KAde crate motor with the least miles on it as possible, then build up a turbo kit for it. oo oo and of coarse you'll need a little suspension work. that can all easily be done for 9 k or so. and it will definately tear some s*** when it comes to speed.

thanks for all the info on the cars i listed, i didnt know what kind of problems those cars had and you guys helped out alot. i live in a small town in southern indiana and there isnt any 93.5+ supras or gen 3 rx7 around here. the only place i've looked is ebay, autotrader.com, and a couple books. ebay and autotrader run at least 10,000 if you can find one for the supra. it is what i like the most i think because of more hp and i havent heard of any real problems with them. i'm worried of what might happen if i bought a car off ebay/autotrader because i wouldn't be able to take it for a test drive or anything BEFORE i bought it. i dont want to spend more than 15,000. i've seen all of these cars for that much. i've also been looking into other vehicles as well. i'm checking out a caddy on 20''s with air bags, ps2, and a system tomorrow

If you want a fast reliable car, buy a Z06, otherwise, stick with your 240 and go turbo.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the RX7.

Everyone keeps talking about that it's plagued with problems. Not unless you do the reliable mods. There's at least 10 mods to do on the motor. Once those are done. You got yourself an awesome motor.

pls.. take the time to read the forums on the rx7 (http://www.rx7club.com/forum/ ). I haveand let me tell you. I would buy a 93 RX7 TT in a heartbeat

Sure you will need to replace the apex seals at every 110,000kmbut that motor will be so strong.. and you'll have a prema smile, everytime you get in the car.

But, fortunately, I fell in love with a 97 240sx se...so I's saving my pennies for the 240sx. If I could I would have both cars in my garage. oh well

and make sure you got a phat paint job cause thats what gets the ladies.

as for the Rex, yeah, once you do some stuff to it, it will runlike a beast, and only need the regular stuff done. C-West built one based on their N1 racing cars, and it was biult up so it doesnt blow up. most of it was just making sure it gets enough fuel and cooling it.

very true, but a new zo6 will cost you about 5ok, and even the o1s and o2s aint sellin for a whole hell of a lot cheaper, remember though, theres a 2ohp differnce between o1 compared to o2s and up

What no sc300? How can you ignore such a classy car. N/A supra power plant, all the Lexus class. Such a pimp ride. If you don't like the N/A then swap out for the turbo motor. I mean if you are looking at a caddy why not the sc300, or even a sc400 with the v8. Here are some stats for the 92 model sc300/400 from http://www.autos.msn.com Quick Facts Blue Book Price $9,000 - $11,400 Blue Book Prices Engines 3.0L 225 hp I6 4.0L 250 hp V8 Transmissions 4-Speed Automatic Overdrive 5-Speed Manual Overdrive More Engine Info Airbags Driver :ylsuper
