I was driving down my street and saw this car that looked like a mr2 from the back and it read subaru svx. I thought it looked kinda cool. I looked it up and it said there were only 14,000 sold in the US and a 25,000 world production. Also read it weighs 3600lbs and its a small car too. Do these cars suck that bad?

"...a full-time four-wheel driveline with computer-controlled torque-split function..."

Got that from an article.

Worked at a Subbie dealer back in the day. Drove one several times, fast, powerful feeling, and very plush inside. I like them, plus they're very rare.

We've got a guy in Inf Gen who was one, can't remember who. They are nice cars, but with the few numbers made, they aren't very common for parts/upgrades. They're AWD and a blast to drive.

Biggest detracter is the windows :(.

But it's a nice car.

Ya I'm not a fan of the windows either. Would have been cool with normal windows.

I like the windows. It's a kinda funky, cool car. All of them are automatics though, AFAIK.

How much do you think they would sell for now?

I see them range from 2500-10000. I found a sweet one with 118,000 for 2995. So yeah pretty cheap. :D

This one looked really nice. I'm sure if they aren't looking to sell it they will want more.

I looked into buying one way back--I really like 'em. Not all of them were AWD and none were manual. A couple guys have swapped in a certain Impreza transmission but I'm not sure how much work that takes. Another problem is their brakes: it's the heaviest car Subaru had made and they didn't have the brakes for it so rotors often warp and the brakes are generally too small.

But overall a very cool car with a nice engine. :thumbup

Yeah, like I said, I don't think a single SVX left the factory with a manual transmission. That's a big thumbs down in my book. Otherwise it looks like a very cool car.

One of the ugliest cars put on earth. And a guy I hated years ago owned one. I was a Benz guy back then, and he had his retarded SVX. :)

I'd buy it if it was cheap. I'd definitely have to do something about the windows but don't know how hard thatd be.

Personal bias aside, its damn nice, and I like the fact that its unique. The windows keep it from looking like an early DSM product.

I see them in the northeast all the time... they are good looking cars. BUT... they really aren't that fast at all. I raced one long before I ever had N2O and I kept up no problem with a nearly stock 240sx. I'd say it was a pretty even match giving him a SLIGHT edge over me. With the 50 shot... I have no doubt I would have wiped his arse quite easily.

Maybe if they weren't so heavy. Anyone know why they are?

It could be because they are big... I don't know the actual size figures... but they are long and wide like a 3000GT. I would say that both cars are about the same in size... and they both weigh about the same...

They are MUCH bigger than an MR2... as you mentioned, the rear ends look similar... but they are a monster compared to the Toyota.

3000GT? No way, they're not that big. The auto transmission/ plus the awd system contributes to the weight and the slowness, no one ever said Subaru's were light cars. In Japan the SVX is called the Alcyone, and has a decent following around the world--and a very strong flat-6 to boot (the rods and crankshaft are forged steel, and the pistons are forged aluminum). I have heard of people converting them into manuals here in the US using a 92-98 generation Impreza transmission, but that's costly and time-consuming i bet.

Very cool car though, i always liked them.

Anyone ever see/remember the Subaru XT? That's an old school Alcyone (first gen that is)

Here's a cool pic i found:

Come on Sky... you have to know I can't let this slide....

3000GT:

Length: 180.3Width: 72.4Heigth: 49.1

Subaru SVX:

Length: 182.1Width: 69.7Heigth: 51.2

As you can see the Suby is longer and taller... and only 2.7 inches narrower. It is a tad lighter though... by about 400 pounds.

MR2 MKII:

Length: 154.5Width: 65.5heigth: 49.2

The 3000GT is still a hell of a pig--it will always take the cake for dumbest sports coupe chassis. I'm surprised about the SVX's specs-- it must be something about the body design that makes me remember the SVX not being any bigger/longer than a Z32.

Yeah, i had to explain to my bf a few weeks ago why the 3000GT sucks, it was a revelation for him. Remember the tool with the drop-top 3000GT that was in SCC's Ultimate Sports Car challenge a few years back? He boasted he had 400hp or something and the dyno test revealed he had almost half that. The editors tore into him, plus he failed miserably at all the other tests or DNF them, it was great.

I actually considered buying an SVX before. The styling is very unique but very dated by today's standards. The engine is very smooth and torquey yet the vehicle still feels slightly underpowered. Aftermarket support is severely limited, I think there's a Roots-type blower kit available for it. A manual swap is available, but transmission durability becomes a big problem.

It's a decent car, but in the end, I purchased a 97 Subaru Legacy GT instead because it was much more practical and handling-wise, performs better out of the box. If you're looking for an AWD coupe, a DSM's a better choice. If rarity is your main priority, then go for it.

i remember reading about dumbass kids saying that used them in japan as police cars and they had TT motors. this was on the SVX forums or something. thats when the guy politley let the kids know that its the same car there as it is here, NO TT engine. cool cars, but yeah, bad brakes. heavy and no aftermarket. i think the only things are suspension and make exhuast, possibly an intake kit.
