How long exactly was it impounded? And for what charge was he arrested? Typically, when a car is impounded, the storage yard must hold the vehicle for at least the length of the impound required by the law. And then, if the car is not picked up, the storage yard can do a lien sale to recover the storage fees. If he did not remove the vehicle right away if the impound did not require a set amount of time, then the lien sale process can start as soon as the vehicle is there. The storage yard has some requirements to try and notify the owner of the intent of a lien sale.
As a note to everyone, if your car is ever in storage and you want to keep it, get it out the first chance you are allowed. Not only are you charged storage, but if your car is lien sold, then you eat the cost of the vehicle.
