After ordering my engine/transmission, motor mounts and clucth kit, I decided to go ahead and remove the old single cam.

I hate having to remove engines by myself...

I had to empravise since I decided to pull the engine on dirt......

holy shiit dude. i dont think i'd ever try that. haha. i'd atleast have looped the strap around the base once, so when pulled taut, it would for sure not slide. thats scary. im sure it was fine, but still makes me nervous. haha.

My engine came in yesterday afternoon so I decide to take a trip up to the freight house and check out what my hard earned money bought me.

To my suprise I wasnt happy.

The bad:-Turbo outlet had some oile residue.....enough to say that the turbo seals are bad.-HKS hose coupler.....tells me that its been modded.-Valve covers have been removed before...had high temp RTV on it.-O2 sensor was damaged.-missing igniter chip-And a dented oil pan.

As soon as I wake up today im giving Tiger Japanese a call......

Im pretty sure that they will want some pics so ill post this afternoon. Hopefully they will take the engine back and send me a new one. I havent excepted the package yet.

Oh yeah I order an RB25det

They seem to be a very repitable company. I talked to them over the phone and the customer service was ok. Plus there shipping was 174 bucks to my door....residential. Everyone else was charging an extra 500 bucks for liftgate services.

Im calling them right now.....keep your fingers cross.

Don't accept it man unless your looking for a HARD long road!! This is what sucks about the Rb motors, There always DOGGED, which makes it extremely hard to make a swap.

yeah this one seem to have been dogged. And I have good reason why:

Found this on the wastegate......seems that someone may have ran a boost controller. The damaged O2 sensor:Missing igniter chip...or what ever controls the spark:The damaged oil pan:Leaking turbo:And the complete engine:

I talked to the guys today and they where acting like me ordering a engine, transmission, ecu and wiring jsut came with those items. I told them that the igniter chip was missing as well as the clucth slave cylinder. They replyed that I ordering just the engine, transmission, wiring and ecu. Doest the slave cylinder and igniter chip come with it???? I mean it says it comes with the distributor.....lol

I should be getting a refund and im ordering from someone else.

Its shocking that they would send a engine in that kind of shape.

The blue hose on the wastegate, high temp RTV on each valve cover, HKS hose coupling on the intake pipe and leaky turbo tells me that someone probably over boosted the turbo. I dont want an engine thats been beat on not to mention that the valve covers where removed for some odd reason.

Oh well it just gives me plenty of time to prep the engine bay... and order more parts to put on...yay

yah that motor looks pretty beat. BUT it doesn't need an ignitor since it looks like it is a Series 2 motor. The ignitor is in the ECU on the Series 2.

From what you have there, I would do a leakdown test on each cylinder to see the condition of the valves/rings. RBs can handle a lot of abuse, so it could just look worse than it is.

Have you inspected the turbo shaft for play yet? Might just be oil from the PCV system too. I know my pipes had quite a bit of oil in them too. Even if it is blown, it just gives you an excuse to slap a bigger turbo on there in the first place

Nah I didnt have a chance to check the play on the shaft. I would of had to bring my tools into the warehouse and start taking stuff apart. The oil that is visible in the pics was enough for me. If I wanted to do a compression test I would of had to go and get my air compressor. I wasnt going through all that trouble..... But I think this next go around im going to spend a lil more money and ask for alot of pics. I didnt ask for any pics with Tiger Japanese b/c I figure.......there the #1 jdm engine supplier in North America...........lol that I could just order and be happy....

Wrong.

I already have my Q45 90mm throttle body, MAF, HX35 Holset turbo, BOV, FMIC kit and 255 walbro.

Im almost ready.

Any ideas about cleaning the paint off the engine bay. I used that Aircraft paint remover but it didnt get everything off.

When you order a new one... I highly recommend Jarco

http://www.jarcoinc.com/

They are pretty close to you and have been around long enough to see UnstableHybrids (was in the same area) open and close. The one engine I saw come from them (half cut RB20DET) was spotless and ran very well.

I bought my motors from Venus... hit and miss so far... one very good (with a bad trans that they replaced) and one long block with a pitted piston. The motor that was in my car (pulled for a blown HG) was from a "reputable" eBay seller... but I buy all of my motors knowing if I don't rebuild them up front I will have to later anyway. If I were to buy a motor I wanted to just drop in... I'd probably go with Jarco

Just my 1.50

FYI, my turbo looked exactly like that when my motor came in. I cleaned it up and it worked great (on a buddies car).

As far as all motors being beatup, not true. Mine was clean and unmodified. You can still see the crosshatch marks in the cylinder walls.

I think you misunderstood... odds are not in your favor when ordering a used uncertified (there is no real "system" for this) performance motor is all I meant. As far as I know... I've never heard a horror story from someone who ordered from Jarco

I went with Jarco for my half-cut R33.

I had a pretty good experience with them. I had a few negatives though:

1. No front brakes - they never said it did not come with brakes

2. No DP - Chassis originally had an Apex exhaust cut-out. they left the handle and base, and just cut the cable for the cutout, and kept the DP + cutout.

3. When delivering the halfcut, it got dropped on the corner and ruined the SMIC.

I don't think they do half-cuts anymore either - their inventory page is gone.

But I will say this, for those negatives, my motor is strong, and in good condition. Turbo has no shaft-play. Engine was pretty clean too.

Not nearly the horror stories that I have heard from people over the years.

I would not hesitate to buy from them again.

Yes, word here in ATL is that Jarco doesn't import motors anymore. They haven't had new motorsets/clips in a looooong time.

Jhot still does apparently, but their next container won't come in until like 1.5 months and there isn't a guarantee that they'll have RB25s.

They still have them... I guess I didn't know about the link b/c I type the below in to check what they have for sale anyway:

http://www.jarcoinc.com/inventory/ebay/

Go ahead and call them if anyone's thinking of buying from them... had good luck with them on the phone ordering random parts in the past.

Not surprised about them pulling parts off though... seeing as they are all on ebay. Just try what I did with Venus and haggle them into including some of the items. This is how I got the turbo and a few other items included in my longblock... granted it came with a pitted piston but there was no way for them to have known that was there w/o pulling the head

Well I talked to the claims department and im a lil relieved. The Gentleman that I talked to seem to be pretty cool and understood my reason for not taking the engine. He was under the impression that I had already taken it and was willing to send the parts or the money to purchase the parts. But He realized that I denied the engine so its on the way and there techs are going to inspect. I told him that I would rather have anouther engine and that didnt seem to be a problem. So im sure Ill hear somthing before the week is out.

In the mean time I primered my engine bay. Also a few things I copped at the local junk yard:

Yeah, they've had like 2 RB25's for a while now @ $3,300+. I guess they're just trying to get rid of what they have left.
