a standalone is a system like the apexi power FC or the aem ems. These are tuning devices that come with their own ecu to replace your factory nissan ecu. They are plug and play and you do the tuning with the controller it comes with where you can visually see things such as all your main sensors voltages, injectors duty cycle and so on..your factory ecu retuned by say enthalpy is also a standalone..a piggyback is a fine tuning device that you buy and use along with your factory ecu such as the apexi safc's

you will have to tune the emanage just like you need to tune the power FC. I like the power FC as a unit better than the Greddy, Ide say stick with it and find somone to tune it.

like i said before..you can do a ballpark tune which will allow you to drive around town fine and everything, good a/f ratios, timing etc but the tune most likely wont be top notch unless tuned by a professional..performance wont be top notch..so yes you can get yourself a ballpark tune if you know sr's well enough

get a g-tech and find a nice empty flat, long road. it's not that hard to tune. you just have to know what your doing. there was a great write-up on tuning with the power fc on newcelica.org a while back. just read a bit and you'll be fine.
