themadscientist what kind of 1/4 mile time can i expect with a stock ca18det engine? I've searched but couldnt find an answer and it seems like ur very knowledgable with the CA engines... so...

there ya go, KA-T running 13.06, nothing done internally, no lsd, street tires. Not to shabby for a truck motor. Thats only at 10PSI.

I have nothing against the KA, but the SR... well... I'm with namrak.

I think I would have to agree with that

the amount of money you pay to have a sr, you have enough to turbo a KA. And the KA will provide more power at the same PSI. No replacement for displacement. BTW, that KA-T I posted above, was only SOHC.

every CA round here is built to the hilt, no stock ones to run or measured quarter mile to run it. I would say pose the question in the CA forum, there has to be someone there who has clocked a stock one. My DE did a very high 16 on a stopwatch, KA kind of time?

I have to agree with that too. cmon there's too much good, informed opinion here with logical support for them, somebody say something stupid so I can yell at them!:D

I think you should get what you want for your own reasons, i personally went with a SR because it looked like the cheapest way to get 300 hp to the ground without any serious tuning (rebuilding engine, etc..) and so far it has been comparitively inexpensive to other options.

themadscientist, its good too read such nice things about the CA motor, especially being cheaper I think its going to be my preference. (top loader injectors can be had for cheap too)

Although I really like the idea of a timing chain with interference type motor. I also like the Hydraulic adjusters making my valvetrain quiet, I don't like having too measure and manually lash my valves.

I don't like aluminum blocks, I strip threads all the time on aluminum heads, I can't imagine a block. I don't understand why people think everyone has a SR and its too popular and not rare, man who cares if other people have a kick-butt motor too.

I think its an excuse for people with KA's too justify not being able too put in a SR. All the reasons are more torque from a slight bump in displacement. I've learned with supras, that trying too heavily to boost an engine never designed for turbo is a bad idea. Buy one of THREE purpose built motors, made too be turbocharged (CA, SR, RB), turboing an engine never made too be turbod is rediculous. Do you know how many car guys would kill too have the option of swapping in a Factory turbo motor?

If you can swap in a SR or CA for less money then turboing a KA, I can't see anyone not picking that option. If you guys like too blow stuff up, then KA-T away! Popular or not, the SR and CA option is superior, its plain and simple.

So your basically saying the 2JZ motor and RB series motors suck compared to the SR because they have iron blocks with aluminum heads...

The block is strong, the pistons and rods wont take much abuse since the engine wasnt meant for turbo. I am going the KA-T route, just mild build up of a spare sohc block i have. The max power I want is around 350 whp.

But if things dont work out the way I plan with the KA-T, im going the CA route :D

KA is 89mm bore right? FJ is 89mm bore too, what's the pin height on the pistons? What are the dimensions of a KA rod;pin diametercenter to center also crank rod journal diameter

I really expected more from him, seeing as how he works/runs a pretty good shop in tampa. Bashing such a strong built motor in favor of whats popular. Ive heard good and bad stories from both motor but to bash such a little power house is pretty low.

mad, ill get you the specs tomorrow. Its getting late here and i have school in the morning :(

Did you want DOHC specs or SOHC, both are pretty much the same really.

well I think he was reaching for the argument that with a head and block of dissimilar material the heat expansion rates are different making it more likely to blow a head gasket. Fact is all the motors you mentioned Nismo are well engineered so it just doesn't happen.

Niz I'm only interested in the bottom end. If the rods and pistons are the KA's weakpoint maybe they can be swapped in from another Nissan engine. With those specs I can cross reference my books, see if there is a Nissan rod and piston combo.

89 mm bore for sohc and dohcpin diameter i think is .866? sound right?c to c is 6.495 (dohc)big end bore is 2.087 (dohc)small end width is .975 (dohc)stroke is 96mm (dohc) sohc?

specs were pulled of a performance site that sells replament performance parts.

Unfortunately the SR is becoming too damn popular for me, I'm even starting to hear absolutely ignorant rice boys at my school talking about getting them for their Preludes and Accords, it makes me want to cry. The CA guys are just a different breed. Not that I'm a CA guy, but those motors are just plain awesome. There's a guy rollin' around here in a completely stock looking S13 coupe with T3/T4 on his and he just destroys everyt silly DSM on Honda that tries to rev on him. The KA-T route is cool and kinda unique but more costly. =\ I'm saving to put an RB25 in my little beater S13 and fix it up this summer. I think about that RB almost as much as my girlfriend in classes.... :D

what i like about the SR20 is its aftermarket support, you can easily get stuff to "fix" the "crappy" valve system for very resonable prices. I personally dont car what kind of noises the engine makes or how smooth it is or how popular it has gotten, as long as it makes enough power for the least amount of money posible. And 300 hp on a KA is really expensive for a person like me who does not have time to tear an engine apart and rebuild it.

anyone read the SCC write in, the one with the s15 silvia on it and about racing in japan. Guy writes in, "can i swap a RB26DETT in my Honda Prelude VTEC for more power"

LOL, sorry I found that funny. The editors response was simple "NO"

before you laugh, I saw a CRX in a magazine converted to RWD with DSM power for some nasty fast times. I use to have a picture of a CRX with a blown big block in it. Anything can be done if you throw enough money at it, look at DikClark, he's like 90!

I couldn't find any factory rods long enough to swap into the KA, looks like Carillo is the only way to go.

Ive heard theres a "JDM" version of the KA motor. Not in the Silvias or 180's of course but in something else over there.

Getting 200 crank hp would be easy, wheel hp maybe be a bit hard and more costly. You can build it up and spray a nice 125 shot;)
