I need a new thermostat for my 240SX with an SR20DET motor. I looked up Nissan at Napa and O'Reilly, but they only show the 240sx or 300zx, no 180sx. The engine is from a 180sx if I am not mistaken, so how do I look up engine parts for it if the 180sx isn't listed in USA databases?

PS: I did a search for the thermostat in this forum and all I found was a part number listing from Australia. No idea if the part number would be the same here...

So I spent a couple hours searching and my research SUGGESTS that the SR motor and the KA motor can use the same thermostat (along with trucks, maximas, ultimas, and more...).

I don't have much money, so I am looking at this one for $8, but I need some confirmation that this part will work:

According to our SR20 forum FAQ the thermostat from a '91 Sentra SE-R should work.

sr20det-parts-guide-page-7-has-complete ... 59345.html

The compatability tab on the O'Reilly lists the '91 Sentra SE-R so I think you're safe trying it, although I would be more likely to trust an OEM part.

Thanks!

I actually removed my thermostat today and dropped it into a coffee cup full of boiling water... It opened right up... Guess I don't even need a new one... :P

Nissan thermostats have a rubber gasket around the mating surface that deteriorates and disappears - so the problem isn't sticking closed, but not letting the car warm up quickly enough.

So... I'm supposed to warm up my car "faster"? I guess I don't understand what you mean... :P

You want the car to warm up to normal operating temperature as soon as possible - and you want to be sure that in cold weather the thermostat can completely close so that the car can maintain it's normal operating temperature. Operating at the correct temperature allows the ECU to go into something called "closed loop" which will help fuel economy and performance.

Awesome thanks! I took the car for a tiny little "drive" to the end of my cul-de-sac and back and it heated up the engine pretty quickly. I spotted 3 coolant leaks from heater hoses (2 holes and 1 missing clamp). Fixed all that up and the over heating stopped. Filled up coolant, burped it out, and heater works great now too! I even managed to zoom down the highway in 5th gear! :D
