Oil changes are the biggest, use good oil and filters, and change it every 3000 miles, more often if you are heavy footed, or see lots of dust. Keep your air filter clean and your coolant topped off. Run the correct spark plug gap and make sure you coil packs are in good shape. If possible, replace your timing chain and oil pump. Running an after market oil pan or oil cooler increases oil capacity, and regulates oil temp, extending engine life. Dont baby the engine too much, if you drive like an old man you will build up lots of carbon, which is hard on the internals. All in all, just keep up on your maintenance, and you should be golden. If you really want it to run for ever, rebuild it from the ground up, then you know its brand new.

Timing chain is very important but only something to worry about if you have a high mileage engine. But then again, if you have money to burn, replacing multiple parts and plan on keeping the engine for quite a while, then I'd say it's a worthwhile investment.

The reason I say timing chain, is because it is so much easier with the engine out of car, and you can never really tell how many miles are on an engine, better safe than sorry.
