hey guys, I'm buying a c/f hood for my 95 240sx, and was just wondering what were the benefits of a c/f hood vs a stock hood. how much lighter are they really? And since less weight=better 1/4 mi times. What changes has anyone seen.

Is it all just cosmetic?

Did research stock hood weighs 47 lbs, C/f 16lbs.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong area. Sue me.

the only difference would be to maintain a weight ratio if you have unbalanced it by adding weight to your front end.

Lighter is better for speed... while your at it pull out the passenger and rear seats, headliner, carpets, dashboard, ac, spare tire, go on a diet, etc.... everything helps. If your gonna do it for speed go all the way.... someone can correct me if a am mis-informed but I believe the stat is a tenth in the 1/4 for every 100lbs....

Yes, I agree with k-car...that is a good improvement in weight reduction, and everything counts, but if the hood is the only thing you're doing to reduce weight, then its not worth it. If you're going to go all out, then yess, the carbon fiber hood I think would be worth it...(I might go that route just because I'd rather get a c/f hood than repaint my old one...) You can save just as much weight by taking out the spare tire/jack. You really want speed? Cut your springs and recline your seat a little...Marc

Yes I read that it was .1 for every hundred lbs. Don't remove your headliner though...if you do that the tracks by me put you in a different class (I have no clue why, but my friends have had some problems and had to put their headliners back in.)

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Also, you might want to add hood pins so your hood doesn't fly open and smash your windshield when traveling at highway speeds.

awww shi.t.... I'm surprised everyone has neglected the easiest and most economical way to improve mad speed and looks/reduce weight....SPEED HOLES! just drill a bunch of speed holes everywhere in the hood, drop half the weight, get a nice custom look, and have increased aerodynamic flow, as well as engine cooling capabilities for increased performance and downforce!!!!!!!

So you would end up with a cheese grater for a hood?

if it was raining wouldn't you worry about all the water going in your engine? anyway you make speedholes with a gun, not a drill.

It could look like a pasta strainer or a cheese grater--thats the beauty of speedholes, you get a mad custom look that even APC can't replicate---who cares about rain gettin in there, rain will just cool the engine and act as an intercooler for the whole engine---> high performance baby! Plus, a little rain is the price you gotta pay for high performance...

well..some people think carbon fiber hoods are a waste of your time. personally, i have one on my car...i notice a difference when i am at a quarter of a tank rather than half...maybe u don't. get the hood, its fun to have anyways. if someone has somethin to say, laugh at their *** for taking their airbags out their car...****em. a carbon fiber hood is a "nicer" mod to have than taking ur seats or headliner out.... i'd take what i can get, but my cars not gonna look like ***.~Scott

What is the average price for a good one?

Not a bad mod if you've got the money, but it's a bit ricey if you do it before coilovers/shocks and engine mods; unless you have to replace your old hood anyway...

I can't even fathom spending $500 to save 30lbs.

Once you get to a certain point where it feels like you've done everything to your car, spending 500 bucks on a carbon fiber hood isn't as crazy as you think... buit by the time you reach that point, your just looking to spend money on the car...

If only.... I'd need a lottery ticket to get me to that point.

Then again, if I had that kind of money it'd be going into more than just a 240sx. I'd never get a cf hood though, I don't like how they look, just a matter of personal taste.

Headers are useless on 4 cyls, you're better off to get an intake/strut bars/plugs/wires or whatever.

I can't believe I'm hearing this. Headers are useless on a 4 cylinder, but then you go on to list a set of plug wires as a performance modification? C'mon, a spark is a spark...it will make next to nothing in difference in performance. Do you have headers on your car? The stock ones are unbelievably restrictive. I have hotshot headers, and they did just as much for performance as my tanabe exhaust...A GOOD AMOUNT, especially past 3500rpm.

LOL they're not useless.... they do have limited effect... until you reach higher horsepowers... 200 and up id say...
