What does it mean when the porcelain on the spark plug is cracked. I dont mean the electrode insulator, Im talking about the upper part of the plug where the coil pack sits down on.

Id say a cracked plug would need to be changed. Im thinking you already knew that though.

The plugs are brand new. NGK 7's and I have already gone through 8 of them in the last hour. What causes this?

either you got some crappy *** plugs to have that many crack or something is either hitting them in the engine, or the heat range is wrong. id bring them all back and make a request for some different ones. did you mention the car you had when you bought them?

stop trying to use a hammer to put your spark plugs in, you are supposed to use a socket.

Ive seen the porcelain crack from detonation (yes even the part that is not inside the combustion chamber) or tightening it too tight.

which brings me to a funny story....

I asked my girlfriend how she would change a spark plug... and she said she would install them in the head using an impact wrench....
