Quote »What are the + and - of using the BKR5E-11 (resistor type) instead of PFR5G-11 other than having the plugs replaced every 25K miles instead of every 60K? [/quote]
Each plug is made specefically for each vehicle. That includes Heat Range, Thread size, small or large spanner size & also length internally & externally. The porcelan is different lengths to suit specefic applications.
The main down side is that a spark will jump across the easiest passage, & if you've ever checked out worn plugs, the electrode is worn like a convex, where as a new plug is dead flat. As the electrode changes to the convex shape, the spark gets thinner, therefore the spark is not as strong.
In the Platinum & Gold Paladium ranges, the electrode or the earth terminal, don't wear hardly at all, so the spark stays pretty well the same size throughout its life. Even after 60,000miles, these plugs are still in reasonable shape.
Another point which MUST be kept, just because the plug LOOKS the same, doesn't mean it will Burn the same. Always & again I say ALWAYS!!! use what the Plug manufacturer recommends. Don't even trust the Cross Reference from a competitors catalogue.
There have been cases of engines melting internals because of the incorrect plug fitted.
Just forget about trying to improve or shortcut the manufacturer, & stick to what they spent countless dollars on getting right!
