Anyone have success in trying to get rid of a skunk (or a few)? We have at least one skunk that has staked claim in our yard, sprayin' all its skunky goodness all over the place in the middle of the night. Just tonight, we spotted it in the side yard from our living room, just kinda moseying around the joint. Joe put a flashlight on it and it didn't even care. We're trying to vacate it before we get our puppy, because I seriously don't want to be bathing a skunky curious dumb pup every night.

Any thoughts? I don't think our neighbors would take too kindly of us shooting it with any sort of weapon, and who really wants to deal with a trapped pissed off skunk, so is there some kind of poison we can leave out? Harsh, I know, but this guy has balls. Before anyone asks, we don't have any neighborhood pets around, and our yard is fenced in.

Is it possible to shoot them without getting after-sprayed?

In my town you're allowed to shoot critters in your yard. Some members of the council want to make that illegal.

honestly? go spend a 100 bucks and buy a pellet gun.a decent pellet gun to the head will kill him instantly(and more importantly silently to your neighbors.) I shoot squirrels and pigeons around my house cause they piss me off and dig into my walls.I've tried trapping them and they would always find their way back.

A skunk is a bit more substantial then a squirrel, so I'd shy away from using a pellet gun since an injured skunk tends to spray everywhere...

I'd call the cops and ask them what they deem OK for this situation, if they say do it, then bring out the .22 and shoot that sumbtich.

Shoot it. Buy a pellet rifle that does at least 1000 fps. It'll take care of the little bastards. I have taken out countless pigeons in my neighborhood, rats, hell, we killed a coyote a while back with it. They're pretty versatile, and no one will hear a thing.

oh man, i had a skunk chew through some styrofoam ans get into my basement a while ago. i woke up to it spraying in the basement and it was unbeilevable , it made my eyes water. I seriously thought that there was an electrical fire going on in my house. so i went looking for it and i couldnt find it down there . so i left the door open for a couple of days hoping it would leave . but it didnt. it turns out that it lived down stairs for almost a week until i got a no kill trap. i set it up at the far end of the basement. i put some peanut butter and cat food in there and went to work. I come home and i cought the sumabitch . went up stairs , grabbed my .22 and shot it in the head. and twice more for good measure cuz it was kinda dark. the skuck ended up releasing its spray again . but a few weeks later the smell was gone and no more skunk.

dont use poison my friend. even if it is "your yard" you shouldnt. you mention you have a puppy and also if the skunk eats it and gets out of the yard and something else eats the skunk than that animal could get poisoned as well and so on. Gl. your best bet it to trap it and try to move it or shoot it

strange this comes up, i have been watching "billy the exterminator" for some inexplicable reason the last few days. i wouldn't recommend pulling out any real firearms, the penalties for shooting anything in a residential area can be pretty hefty. if you really want to poison it, i'd just leave out a dish of coolant. it works for cats.

in the end. they're skunks, after this one, there will always be more. and skunk smell does not come out of dogs for a long time. i don't care what someone recommends, as i've tried it all.

I love this thread title. I hear it in the casual, disappointed, and slightly ominous tones of John Hurt.

.22 long. Rifles have a less powerful round that isn't much louder than the 1000fps "Gamo" brand air rifles everyone is talking about. The round is 1/3 the power of a regular 22 hollowpoint. Yet strong enough to kill a groundhog. Look for .22 CB caps. Theyre really short bullets. Animal control is also a great idea. Let them get sprayed trying to wrangle them into a cage.

Also, if you don't have a pellet gun but you do have a .22 and are concerned with noise you can buy .22 silent rounds. They fire on a slightly over powered primer but have no gun powder in them. They fire at just over 500fps with a slightly lighter than normal .22 round. They don't cycle a semi-auto, not enough power so you have to rack each round but they take out squirrels up to 50yards.

 to everyone who's said, "shoot it". Shoot a skunk and you're gonna be dealing with every last bit of his rank, putrid stench for a month.

So, geniuses, what do you propose she do with A DEAD, STINKY, SKUNK? :slap:
