Hey,

I bought my Altima Coupe just a couple weeks ago. So far all I've done is remove my emblems, and tint my windows. My next modification will be installing fog lamps. What I was hoping to do after that is this whole baking head lights task, that I see some of you out there have done. My purpose for doing so is mostly to get rid of the orange part of my head light, without simply putting a tint over it. I was wondering what people think about the whole baking headlights process, and I was wondering what to do about the orange piece. Is it a better idea to simply remove it and take out the bulb, or paint over it in black? Any pointers would help me out.

if you take out the orange piece it looks weird in my opinion. I painted it black and I'm very happy with the way it came out. this was my first time EVER baking headlights and it wasn't TOO hard. I learned a few things from doing it though and wish I knew then what I know now... like making sure the inside of the light is super clean before sealing the light back up, putting it on a towel so I dont get scratches (the scratches are coming out after polishing it a good amount), and a couple other things. in the end, the car looks 1,000 times better. my lights (both of them) lightly fogged up for about a week after baking my lights but I guess once the sealant fully dried that problem went away. I havent had any condensation or foggy lights or anything. it looks like it came from the factory like this.

So you mean put it on a towel while baking it? And also how does the light look with the painted over orange piece? did you take out the bulb?

well, I didnt want to melt the sides or anything so I put a wet towel under the light. but when I took it out of the oven I just put it down and pried it open and doing so, I scratched the clear part of the light. I had a thread on here with a billion pics and did a write up (oh ya, mods, wheres my special title??) so if you want to search for it, it could help you out a lot

I keep reading all these posts about baking headlights...I NEED THIS! I wonder of there is a way to split them without baking? Some kind of solvent on the sealant? Im going to look into it...

lol good luck with that. Nissan uses some pretty crazy stuff thats almost impossible to melt. after baking, you have to fight with it using a screw driver. the sealant barely weakens after baking it.

heres a link to my thread I made when I was doing mine

Yeah I read through your thread a few times, Im just nervous about overbaking them and melting more than just the sealant. I think it doesnt really weaken because 6 minutes in the oven shouldnt really expose it to a huge amount of heat. I mean, dont get me wrong Im sure they are hot as hell when they come out and its just enough to start to break down the structure of the sealant, but I want to dissolve it completely.

I have a friend who does sign work, car wraps, vinyl lays, things like that. He has access to some pretty high industrial grade solvents that might do the trick. Either way, Im not baking the lights I currently have, I would buy a fresh pair off eBay in case I mess something up and so my car isnt out of commission at all.

look half way down my page 2 in the link I posted. It shows how it looks if you paint the orange piece black and leave the bulb in it... I didnt like the way it looked so unplugged the bulb. If you take out the bulb, there will be a hole where the bulb is supposed to go and you may have your light fog up so I left the bulb in there but unplugged the wire from the bulb... ignore the tape on the light, I know it looks bad  it was a long night and I ran out of time so that was just a temp thing. theirs no tape now and no foggy lights or anything
