Not sure if this is what you're looking for or not, but its cam timing related.

zerothread?id=140310

Also, when setting the timing, have the crankshaft set at TDC and the camshafts set so that the cut-outs in the cams for the headbolts are facing towards the center of the cylinder head.

Cyl#1 camlobes are opposing when Piston#1 is at TDC.

Is this the dot you mean?(Circled/Squared in red)

If so, thats for one of the silver links on the timing chain.

i cant believe the oil pump gear on the crank rely's on the pulley to stop it from free spinning

ie. no woodriff key

ahhhh what can ya do ... the chains were still tight ... until i removed the tensioner on the 1-3-5-7 bank ... then the lower RH guide snapped completely

the 2-4-6-8 bank chain was still tight even with the broken slack side guide

so i'd say my valves are ok ... just need to put the new guides on and then do a cylinder leakage test on each to make sure no bent valves before it goes back in

Why you need to read the FSM and all the previous posts by Q45tech. There is a very good reason the crank bolt is torqued to 270 ft. lbs., or whatever the specification is.

well that would help but still ... if by chance it comes loose ... not only do you shear the woodriff keys but you lose oil pressure!!

full length woodriff key cut into crank the first opportunity i get

You're Welcome.

Maybe its just me, but are you missing the timing cover sections of the headgaskets?

The front half of your head gaskets, (the section that goes between the lower cover & the upper covers), look like they are missing.

so i guess its safe to say the front covers have been off before at some stage and the head gasket has been butchered

well that settles it then ... off come the heads

Been searching for a while now for info on fine tuning the timing, this thread seemed to be very informative but I'm quite sure I dont' need to mess with the cam chains to tweak the timing. Can someone provide some info on how one would change timing from 15 to 17 or vice versa, or say it was at 14 and needed to move it to 15. You get the idea.
