yeah its a case of the ads are 2Mb and when you post a quote reply, it loads the entire ad before it loads the quoted text to reply, so you end up waiting like 10 seconds before your quote text shows up... why the text shows up in javascript is totally beyond me in the first place, stupid scripting IMO.

this crappy javascript to insert the quote text:

onbody 'DoQuote('5473526', 'numbnuts240');'

function DoQuote(id,un) { id = 'document.quoteform.quote' + id; var tb = eval(id); DoInsert('[ QUOTE=' + un + ']' + tb.value + '[/QUOTE ]');}

no reason at all for this to be in javascript, seems like a patch-up.

another problem with zeroforum.. when you edit or post a new post, you can't refresh the page without it trying to repost your data... should post then redirect.

that's a pretty damn big ad... I would have thought we would have size limits on the ads.

I wonder if any of this crap will change when we change forum software.

Try doing it from a mobile device on 3G and not WiFi, it's 10x as bad.

If only Toyota owners would think that way and stay home.

Two thoughts here:

1) We're way ahead of ya. These things take time, tho. Software upgrade on the way, and a more efficient way of serving sponsor banners as well....

2) Lots of criticism from you, but not once have I seen you step up with an offer of assistance. The staff here bust their a$$es to keep this place up and running...

So maybe rather than being rude, and acting like you could do SO much better, how about pointing issues out via email, or better yet, bringing some of your supposed expertise to the table?

When someone provides something to you for free, you don't b**** about it unless you're willing to pitch in and help fix it.

send me ssh access to the web server and I'll have it fixed by this afternoon. Put it as read-only I'll test it and send you the files that need changing.

zeropost and zeromodify.

I can also optimize the entire site so it uses gzip compression where available and save you a ton on bandwidth and make the site load much faster for clients that support compression (ie: 98% of them).

This sounds awesome

Had no idea TG was a programmer. Any who just a thought, I always used to have to wait for that LONNNG wait time when editing/quoteing but soon I realized all you need to do it press the "X" or "Stop" button after waiting 2-3 seconds. I never knew it was delayed because of ads...

Every interesting.

well, its delayed by several things, but if it loaded with the page instead of javascript, then it wouldn't have to wait for the entire page to load before putting your quote in the reply box (sometimes mid-ways though your sentence).

Dude, you have NO idea how many times I quote and start typing away only to have my sentence cut off and the other half under the quote. If this gets fixed, I will give you an E-Beer.

I wonder if NICO would really hand-off the keys to the server to a stranger like that tho.. :/

Well, i don't need to write anything to the server or have access to the database, just revise the scripts and send them back. I can also have a look at how the zeroforum script works and likely speed things up significantly.

I've seen the new relynet forum replacement for zeroforum (livetopic) and it has the same issues as zeroforum. Anyways, I'm willing to spend some time on it if it will make things better for everyone, myself included. I wont charge for it, just a friendly service.

IDK the first thing about coding so I am sure precautions will be taken. As for which one, I have no idea but don't take my NICO away....

I never knew that was what was causing this. Interesting.

In the meantime I just scroll down and click the quote button for the post I want to quote on the reply page and bypass the issue. Does it take longer than if everything worked right? Yes. Longer than waiting on the ad to load? No.

I say old chap! This is no clever ruse! To test this I have returned on my phone and have indeed found it out to be true!

I'm posting from a stinkin' Motorola Karma with no issues. :p

Best downgrade I've ever made.

You can offer access with permissions.

In this case permissions would need to be set to read only, and sections of view limited.

This type of thing is done everyday.

And you never edit the main server directly. You test in a sandbox and then update the server. This minimizes downtime.

Thanks, Captain Obvious. We're all much more enlightened now.

tg, that's much appreciated. I'm reluctant to move forward on anything related to ZF right now, since we won't be using it for much longer.

We've already completed Stage I of our big upgrades (migrating all static content to WP), and are implementing gzip on both the forum templates and the static stuff (as well as the ad server) just like you suggested...

Apologies for my snotty reply yesterday - This whole transition has been stressful, and I'm running on 4 hours sleep a night lately... But Stage II should be done this weekend!
