paddle shifters are mounted to the steering column, I remeber seeing a thread a while back where a guy had an AUTO 240sx and he had paddle shifters...
You fail at life.
A dog box refers to a transmission with straight cut (dog) gears. Dog boxes have no synchronizers, and the clutch isn't really needed for shifting. The downfall of straight cut gears is simple, noise, ever wonder why the transmission makes so much noise when you reverse? Its because reverse is a straight cut gear, now imagine that wine in every gear, Ive driven race cars with dog boxes, it sucks for street driving. A sequential transmission has all the selectors in a row, so gears are selected one after another, no jumping around. Many sequential transmissions use straight cut gears for better durability.
Dog boxes and sequential transmissions are two totally different things.
To the OP, it is possible to use a sequential shift converter on a normal transmission, but as you see, it is bulky, and expensive. The alternative route is to find an actual sequential gearbox, IIRC HKS makes one for the SR bellhousing, though I doubt you could find one in the states.
/edit/ Yep HKS makes one, but good luck finding one. HKS Sequential transmission for S13/S14/S15 IMHO learn to shift like everyone else, or go buy an auto with a rat box.
