Who said cars with more potential have to be more expensive than the Versa?
Quote »and to answer your question, less than $16000 [/quote]$16,000 can get you a lot of cars with potential, and in some cases with money to spare. For example, used VW GTI and the DSM cars (Eclipse GST, GSX and their Dodge/Chrysler variants). Both have huge aftermarket support. Power, suspension, you name it. The first generation DSM can be had for less than 3k. The turbo 4G63 motor is capable of 300hp easily with a few simple mods. There are folks out there running 8 second quarter mile. The motor used in the EVO is derived from it! Back in 2001 I bought a 1st gen Talon TSi (rebadged Eclipse GSX AWD) with 80k original miles for less than $3000. 210 hp stock. Add a manual boost controller, intake, larger modified stock intercooler, HKS blow-off valve, turbo back exhaust... at just under $800 spent in addition to the cost of the car, it was a 270hp screamer, and it weighed less than 2600lbs. Versa is just over 2700lbs.
If you're broke and stressed then "every little bit counts" makes even less sense. If you're going to give up the Versa, sell as a private seller. Don't trade it in. The dealers will take advantage of you and give you far below market value. Once you've sold the car you'll have cash in hand to buy something inexpensive, used, and have more potential. Then you can mod to your heart's content and still have fun.
