Hey guys, rumor has it, it's ok to walk up to a police officer and push him off of a perp he is trying to detain. THIS DOES NOT WARRANT PHYSICAL FORCE OR REPERCUSSIONS. So feel free to go around pushing and interfering with arrests. Nothing will happen. Its cool.

I watched the video, and there is a huge piece of the puzzle missing. What led up to the arrest? If it were ordinary jaywalking, and no chain reactions, then it might be viewed as an overreaction, HOWEVER, if the jaywalking woman perhaps caused cars to swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting her. Then the officer is justified to ticket her. We don't really know the other details yet. It looks like the woman totally went off on the cop which was a guaranteed arrest.

It looks like the cop used a lot of patience/restraint. He could have easily wrestled her to the ground to subdue her but he tried to cuff her standing up. She was stupid for resisting so hard. The woman in pink was even more stupid for physically inserting herself into the middle of an arrest. She made the first agressive move, so the cop was within his right to defend himself with a punch. Shooting her would have been excessive, but a simple jab was appropriate.

I;m sure we'll get more details soon.

There was no immediate danger, you guys can throw 1000 variables at this but at the end of the day, 2 little, but tall girls were crossing the street.
A punch is still lethal, although less then a heart stopping tazer... in this scenario a punch would be warranted if the officers balls were attacked.
No human should be treated this way, either mentally sound or retarded, this s*** happens too many times... Im disgusted that everyone here defends the officer, guys like this should lose there job and be replaced by sincere police men.

I'll be showing up later to rob your house. Make sure there's milk and cookies waiting for me. Maybe rub my feet when I'm done?

Your post is beyond ridiculous. Someone attacks you, you defend yourself, no matter WHAT clothes you're wearing.

No you wouldn't. She'd have beat you down.

Then you'd have gotten FIRED for not following protocol. Your emotion-based opinions mean nothing in this case.

And then you play the race card? STFU and GTFO. You're the only one seeing color here. Grow up.

To get this topic away from the pantywaist criminal defender and back to reality...

The punch was absolutely within reason. The purpose for a punch, in the Continnuum of Force (which Vig hasn't read, because it contains too many big words), is to temporarily stun and disorient an attacker who is in close range, so that the officer can re-establish control of the situation, protect HIS and THE SUSPECT'S safety, and effect the arrest.

That is PRECISELY what happened in the video.

All this talk of Tasers is ignorant. A Taser requires additional range.

Any talk of batons is also ignorant. An ASP is a deadly weapon, and not called for in that instance.

All this talk of "the officer should have grabbed her leg" or whatever is likewise ignorant. The officer is under NO OBLIGATION to endanger his own safety during this confrontation. He followed the Continuum of Force TO THE LETTER. How can you fault him for following policy and procedure?

Why should he expose himself to injury? Why? He's a law-abiding man working for a living. Do YOU, as a taxpayer, want to pay for his hospital bills if she scratches his eye out? Hell no.

If you don't like what you saw, then go get on the Citizen's Review Board and lobby for the cops to blow kisses at psycho Bigfoot-lookin' b****es who attack them. I guarantee you'll get laughed at.

Like I said before, the ONLY reason this officer will receive any discipline or "training" is to appease the crybaby morons who have nothing better to do than to defend a$$ people who can't seem to behave in public.

Side note: Let's pretend this guy is OUT of uniform. A regular citizen. Two big broads attack him. Is he THEN justified in busting her in the snout? You're damn right he is. Let some big Neanderthal wench come get all crazy on me in public and she'll be lucky if she only gets popped once. I'm not gonna take ONE SCRATCH just because someone can't behave in a civilized manner. Lay hands on me, get KTFO. Simple. I'm looking out for me and my family, not some psycho Amazon crackwhore. /rant.

Greg i like you, and not in the gay way this instance. We think alike. I Cannot stand people still playing the race card. Automatically, because she is black, people assume that it is a racially charged thing. NAACP needs to stop crying and trying to allow this type of behavior be deemed acceptable by "law abiding citizens" . Frankly, If you break the law expect repercussions, regardless of color and social status.

I'm surprised he didn't pull his service pistol and gun both of them down in the street thinking finally he'll have proof that Sasquatch do exist

Let this be a lesson, if you stand out like a Red Corvette, don't break the law right in front of a Police Officer. If you do find yourself getting unwanted attention from law enforcement, don't behave like a barely trained gorilla FFS.

BTW, if you think jay walking isn't a crime, try driving through an actual city where stupid people walk out from inbetween parked cars and cause accidents. I have no sympathy for stupid.

If an officer wants to write you a ticket, you take the ticket.

The officer is NOT a judge. Go before the judge, plead your case, and no one gets punched. It's the way a civilized judiciary works.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people will stand there and argue with a cop, who has no authority to determine guilt or innocence, and thereby make matters WORSE for themselves. Educate yourselves and THINK before you act.

As usual, Greg is right.

An ASP would have been WAY overkill. It's incredibly easy to kill people in a hurry with an ASP.

That's all. No need to get aggro.

Besides, you can criticize the Prez all day long. You're well-versed in politics.

i am a little confused. In the Philly's fan runs on the field thread you were in full support of the police officer tazing the fan. There was no physical threat to the officer or anyone in the area. Then in this situation when there was an immediate physical threat to the officer you are saying that a tazer is not warranted.

Please clarrify if you have time.

Thanks

Correct.

You misread the part where I pointed out that a Taser is not appropriate for close confrontation. It's not warranted in this case because it's the wrong tool for the job... overkill, if you will, and requires more physical distance (and time) than this officer had at his disposal.

Taser use is unique (in some municipalities) in that it doesn't require immediate physical threat, TMK. It can be used to subdue / detain a suspect after they disobey a lawful order.

I can see the officer got pushed away so it pissed him off enough to punch the chick, but he attacked her like she was a big dude, come on guys.
You're all fu*king CRAZY.

Also, neutering the police's powers? I personally think that the dogs of the executive branch need to be watched and monitored MUCH more then they are now!
Life is getting so crazy now that you can't cross the street without worrying about getting arrested. It seems as though some of you really don't have to deal with over-zealous police officers. Move into a major metropolitan area and check it out sometime.
