Baker Motor Company in Charleston SC tampers with vehicles when they come in, so I do understand where you are coming from.
Morris Nissan in Charleston SC is the best dealership I have ever dealt with! Family owned and operated, incredibly honest and fair with their pricing. They even gave me a discount on my Z32 igniter when I did the swap on my rb!!

Nissan didn't even perform the free multi-point inspection when I had the seatbelts done. Of course, this is probably dealership-specific.

I don't mind if they don't perform the multi-point inspection as long as they don't screw around with my ride.

Did either of you guys go through with the free seat belt replacement yet?

OK so here's the deal. I went to get the seatbelts checked in August and the service writter said they still retracted but slow. He wouldn't let me show him my issue when I unbuckle the belt just sits there until I give it some assistance. He also said they can't do anything unless they completely do not retract. I was a bit ticked off to say the least, what do you think I should do?

Alkorahil wrote:If your local dealer is giving you problems on seat belt replacement under warranty give them this information including the Op Codes, this is straight from Nissan.

WARRANTY COVERAGE
PLAN SB
Seat Belts - Useful life of the vehicle for 1989-2002 vehicles, 10 years for 2003 up vehicles.
OpCode VK22AA Replace Front Seat Belt Tounge Assembly - One side
OpCode VK213AA Replace Front Seat Belt Tounge Assembly - Both Sides

If you take your vehicle to get seat belts done, and they say it is not covered, tell your Service Advisor to contact their Warranty Administrator and give this information, if they do not cooperate call 1-800-NISSAN1.

I went to the infiniti dealership today and the service advisor told me it would cost $120 to look at the belts. I told him infiniti covers seat belt repairs/replacements and to look it up. He spent 10 min and finally showed me a sheet saying seatbelts are under warranty for the lifetime of the vehicle. However, he pulled up another database and it said it only covers qx from 03-up.(weird). The service manager was out on vacation that day and he wasn't sure when he will be back but he believes now that infiniti should cover the costs but was unable to make calls due to the absence of the manager. I am now waiting on him to call be back once everything is sorted out.

I also went to the Nissan dealership and the advisor told me that Nissan cannot perform manufacturer warranty repairs on my Infiniti.

Cool! Good thing you replaced the seatbelts, else that internal failure could have caused a problem down the road.

Now, how do we prevent the seatbelts from becoming slow again in 5-7 years? I suppose all we can do is keep the seatbelts clean and clean the D-rings periodically to reduce dirt build up.

Seatbelts are warrantied forever for 1989-2002 vehicles, 2003+ it's 10 years. But yeah, they are indeed warrantied for "life" for you and I, so I suppose it might be a moot point.

Wow! I'm getting plenty of push back on this recall.

I just got a 1998 QX4 (in great shape) but of course the front seat belts don't retract properly. I called my local Infiniti dealership and they said they have no knowledge of a "recall" volunteer or otherwise like this.

I then called the 1-800NISSAN1 number and spoke to the Customer Service Area dealing with recalls, etc. They took all my information and checked the available recalls (based on the VIN) and they said there are "no such recalls" for the seat belt not retracting. Hmmm.

Okay, where did I go wrong? I also asked them to check the OpCode numbers that are posted above and they said they don't see them as any recall, even for the Nissan Pathfinder.

I'm lost. Please let me know if there are any more options to get these retractors fixed under this recall.

Thanks everyone, this is a great forum. Having just bought the car, you all have gotten me up to speed very quickly. I feel I know more than the dealership (in this case anyway) lol.

This isn't a recall, it's just warranty. Your seatbelts are warranted for life and ask for your service adviser to replace them because of a failure in the seatbelt pre-tensioner. Give them the opcodes mentioned above.

Thanks for the clarification. That does make my case a little stronger.

However, I just called the Infiniti dealership with that information and they said "no". I also called the nearest Nissan dealership and inquired and they said they knew nothing of any extended or lifetime warranty on the belts. They both said any opcode would not matter, it only goes by the VIN (whatever).

I guess I'm going to have to find something in writing.

I'm not giving up!!!

The dealers you called sound incompetent. If you have the warranty information and maintenance log booklet, it is clearly stated that seatbelts have a lifetime warranty on the inner side of the booklet's cover.

Yea they are definitely wrong. The belts are under a manufacturer warranty for the life of the vehicle. Was the service manager there?

Yeah, yours will be replaced. Ask for them to be replaced under the lifetime seatbelt warranty, they should do so.

How bad were your guy's seatbelts?

On my Pathy, for both the drivers and passenger's front seatbelts I have to pretty well feed them back in to get them to retract.

They may eventually go back 3/4 way in if left alone. But they are slow.

Is that deemed bad enough?

I don't really want to go to the dealership for them to tell me its not as bad as it could be.

Mine didn't retract at all after a few inches of initial retraction. I had to feed my driver's side in manually completely every time I got out of the vehicle. Passenger side wasn't so bad, but was still annoyingly slow. I keep the D-rings clean now after replacement to hopefully help prevent the issue from recurring in the future; if it does, I can still get another set of seatbelts under warranty. Original rears still work fine (no doubt due to much less use). I could use a new center belt due to some nasty cosmetic damage, but I digress.

Yeah mine are not that bad, and for some reason they get better when it's warm out.

I Just checked them now, and them seem acceptable... (Its uncharacteristically sunny in Vancouver today)

Yes definately do what towncivilian said. When I took mine in, the inspection report stated: found internal failure in front driver and passenger belts. My belts were just barely lagging.. depending on the weather.

I just had mine replaced, no problems at all and no cost. The belts do seem to be slightly different, the thickness and weight of the fabric seems less. Im pleased with the new belts as it feels like Im not wearing a seatbelt and there is no restriction when I move or adjust my position while driving.

I thought the same of the new seatbelts. They are much more comfortable; it's almost a pleasure to wear them now. :)
