The boyfriend and I are on a bender for scary movies, we've been watching them every night lately and need some new ones.
What are your recommendations for best scary movies?
I think everyone has a different definition of scary--for me, its the unknown. The gory stuff doesn't really scare me (like Saw, for example)
I like movies like:

Paranormal Activity
The Descent
The Strangers

and if you haven't seen this movie, i highly recommend it---it's a spanish cam style movie called REC and theres a sequel called REC 2. I think Quarantine was based off of it. Download it and then theres also a program you can download to get subtitles---trust me, it's worth it.

So what are the scariest movies you've ever seen?

They don't make horror movies like they used to. I'm a fan of the classics (no remakes there unless specified):

The Amityville Horror
The Shining
Halloween
Rosemary's Baby
The Exorcist
The Fog
The Thing (John Carpenter remake)
Phantasm
Them
Kingdom of the Spiders (awful but awesome)
Nightmare on Elm Street
Blair Witch Project (okay, so not old, but still a classic)

I've also heard great things about "Let the Right One In" though I haven't had time to watch it yet.

"The Grudge" is also pretty good.

As is the original version of "The Eye".

I'm cool with classics--agree they dont make horror moves like they used to anymore.

Also love Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween
Blair Witch Project

I recently thought of movies that used to scare the s*** out of me as a kid, watched the trailers on YouTube and unfortunately they aren't scary anymore:
Childs Play 1-3
Bride of Chucky
Seed of Chucky
Those all ended up as comedy-horror anyway

Puppetmaster (remember that doll with the drill on top of his head? omg.)
Gremlins (ok wasn't really a scary movie but scared me when I was a kid. lol)

A lot of my favourites have been mentioned already, but a few I'm not seeing...

Alien (a modern masterpiece)
Diabolique (a classic!)
The Wicker Man (the 1973 version not the awful Nick Cage remake)
The Ring (more polished than Ringu, but it's worth seeing as well)
Chinese Ghost Story (dated effects but worth watching)
Audition (Ôdishon) - a bit gory but worth watching, best to watch without knowing anything about it
Salem's Lot (The old tv version with David Soul & James Mason, directed by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw fame)
Trilogy of Terror (only watch the Zuni fetish doll bit ...can't believe it was a made for tv movie - It's available on YouTube - Here's part one of three )
Prince of Darkness (an often overlooked John Carpenter movie)

I'm a sucker for the old Hammer horror films of the 50's & 60's with Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee but I don't think those are what you're looking for.

I enjoyed PA up until the very end. lop off the last few seconds and its great; include them and its a major disappointment.
I hated The Descent, I'm starting to think I may be slightly claustrophobic as I felt pretty ill in an airplane and can't stand the thought of going underground caving, etc.
Loved The Strangers, and therefore I recommend the movie "The Orphanage" dir by Guillermo del Toro. I'm not one to jump during scary movies too often, but there is one scene in this flick that got me.

I keep seeing this one on lists of best horror movies I see on the Internet and thought the preview looked weird. We downloaded it and I fell asleep but my mister said he got through part of it and it was intriguing, so I guess I'll give it another chance.

The descent for some reason I REALLY LIKED. It was just friggin scary to me. I never want to go caving, spelunking, anything like that, ever. I couldve done without the monsters, the fact of being trapped down there is scary enough.

The orphanage is also on my list of downloads, that looks good!

Hands down best scary movie.

Sunshine is awesome, too. And Shutter Island is not a scary movie. It's scary in the same way 1 Hour Photo is scary... they aren't. I can't really think of any more that have not been mentioned.

If you dont mind reading subtitles I recommend the movie Martyrs. Probably one of the best horror movies i have ever seen. Crazy plot and pretty gory very well acted and directed.

Also the movie The Collector is a awesome horror flick. Not the best acted but it really doesnt need to be. Check them both out i promise you will not be disappointed in either of them. Best if you only watch one watch Martyrs its awesome. I think you can find them both on nextflix too

Shutter Island was more suspensful thriller, but still one of the greatest movies of that year. Worth seeing. I CANNOT watch The Grudge. That sound and the way she moves seriously makes me feel fear, no joke.

A straight to VHS that I used to watch in the early 90's that gave me nightmares was Flesh Eating Mothers. Probly wont find it tho, but maybe worth it. I keep wanting to watch that. Whats that other movie with Robert DiNero where he is a skitzo and kills people... yeah that one was scary. Lets see whats been mentioned, dont really remember Event Horizon to well. The Eye with Halle Berry (right?) was good, or I think thats Gothika.. both good. I actually watched PuppetMasters like a month ago.

I like alot of the 2000+ movies: Paranormal Activity 1/2 (1 was way better), The Strangers, The Ring, The Sixth Sense. The first Saw, The Hills Have Eyes, The first Night of The Living Dead (late 80s and also the very original black and white were great), Signs, Quarantine was in my top 3 of all time!!

will post if I think of more

"Alien" and "The Exorcist" are the two scariest movies I have ever seen! :ohno:

After watching "The Exorcist", I could not sleep in the dark for months ... even now, just the thought of it brings shivers down my spine.

Shutter Island wasn't really scary, just suspense. meh. deleted.

Got through half of High Tension---its scary, but i'm still hung up on how/why the guy just shows up on the doorstep and knows theres women in the house to kill/take advantage of.

Got through part of cloverfield, kind of excited to finish it. I like not knowing what it is attacking the city.

Halfway through the Last Exorcism, I actually like this one a lot.

Not sure I really want the answer to this, but why are you unable to get through an entire movie?
