you dont pay for "pretty chrome", i dont know many chrome exhaust....
you pay for whats called "research and development"...these manufactured exhaust arent just a piece of straight metal which is put up to the bottom of the car, and bent around driveshaft etc (which a muffler shop does), its effective to get HP gains....dyno tested etc....when you get a 'custom' job, unless your a pro racer, you will not put an exhaust on, dyno it, take it off, make adjustments, put it back on, dyno it again, etc etc....
and like i said, a custom mendrel bent exhaust will NOT be much less money then a manu'd exhaust...if you think thats the case, let me know what you end up paying for yours.....
look at it this way- apexi N1 is like 450.
Apexi N1 muffler 199.99labor @ $70 an hour- $140-200Piping- $ (thats the question, whats it going to cost you for the quality of pipe you want to use??)
so if your not getting the piping for less than 50-70 your not saving money, or if the labor is more, your not saving money....
like i said, its possible to save doing it that way, but usually the custom jobs cost as much if not more than a manu'd one...
