you dont pay for "pretty chrome", i dont know many chrome exhaust....

you pay for whats called "research and development"...these manufactured exhaust arent just a piece of straight metal which is put up to the bottom of the car, and bent around driveshaft etc (which a muffler shop does), its effective to get HP gains....dyno tested etc....when you get a 'custom' job, unless your a pro racer, you will not put an exhaust on, dyno it, take it off, make adjustments, put it back on, dyno it again, etc etc....

and like i said, a custom mendrel bent exhaust will NOT be much less money then a manu'd exhaust...if you think thats the case, let me know what you end up paying for yours.....

look at it this way- apexi N1 is like 450.

Apexi N1 muffler 199.99labor @ $70 an hour- $140-200Piping- $ (thats the question, whats it going to cost you for the quality of pipe you want to use??)

so if your not getting the piping for less than 50-70 your not saving money, or if the labor is more, your not saving money....

like i said, its possible to save doing it that way, but usually the custom jobs cost as much if not more than a manu'd one...

First off, finding a place that does mandrel bending can sometimes be hard. Second, they are just as expensive to get the pipe designed and made when it's all said and done. The bright side though, is that if you get some before and after dyno runs done, and you make HP, you can market and sell the exhaust yourself in group buys or whatever because once the exhaust is already designed, they can bend pipes and make new ones quickly and easily for much less money.

I already have a muffler I will use (on my current 240sx, but I have 2.5 inch piping so just upgrading that). They quoted me $150 for 3inch mandrel bent piping. With labor.

So 150 vs 450...umm I'm getting it done at a local shop.

There are additional things you lose out on as well, in addition to all the research you miss out on the particle paints and such. Not that they're life and death, but it's nice to keep temps down in your exhaust manifold and turbo on your car. : )

Ok, great for you....in the "real world" you will not find a quality 3" job with mendral bends for that price....I have the connections in this world, and i cant even have my car touched and on a lift for under 80 bucks........so either this place makes no money on labor, is using a crappy pipe, or is a misunderstanding....otherwise go for it i guess, thats cheaper than a minike (however its spelled) job....

oh, and i guarantee you that that piping is not stainless steal, and does not have ceramic coating, so it will RUST eventually..
