Dilemma. I need shorter gearing, as in as short as possible.

As some of you may know, I am in the process of building a rally car (Nico's Rally Car) and I need to shift the gearing balance to help keep the car in its power band.

The car currently has the stock open 4.08 rear end.

I need to up my rear end ration. Ive thought about running a 4.11 from an R32 GTR, but its only a small change.

In my research, I have discovered that some of the lower model R32/R33s came with a 4.36 rear end. This is getting better, and if there is nothing higher, Its the way I will go, but Id like to get off the beaten path.

I have heard rumors of 4.62 rear ends in some skylines, but this is unconfirmed. I also know that some of the Nissan Truck/SUVs had 4.62 rear ends, but these were used in solid axle applications.

Does anyone know what models came with a 4.62. Has anyone ever tried swpping the ring and pinion off a 4.62 rear end into an R200?

Im really looking for some insight guys. Calling all Niconauts, I know this info is out there, but Ive been searching for 2 days, and Ive got nothing.

Yep, not sure what years, tho. The 4.3 came on the early CA equipped CA18DET S13s, I think it was the first half of the 89 model year.

Thats what I am hoping. I will be pulling the diff out to weld it up anyway, so a ring/pinion swap would be easy. Im just not sure the ring/pinion are the same.

I know they are both R200 differentials, but I have not found anyone who has done it. I guess its time to order one up, and see what happens.

swap in a 4.44 r160, save 25lbs.

I think nissan comp had options of a 4.6xx for the r180s

that was no help

Look into older Mazda's and Subarus. The latter of which used both the R200 and R180 diff. You may find something useful there.

Really, I was not aware of that. Any idea if the guts from one of them would fit into the S chassis case?

Ive found more ratios I like. Some of the Nissan Xteras came with 4.62s and even 4.87s. The only problem the diff is the C200, as apposed to the R200. These are 2 different diffs that share a 200 mm ring dear diameter. What are the chances any of the parts are interchangeable.

As for the Subarus. From what I can tell, most of them came with the R160 differential, which many people upgrade to the stronger R180, and even some instances of swapping to the R200. I cannot find any models, except possibly the SVX turbo, that came factory with the R200. Time to start looking at Mazda's.

These cars came with 4.36 R200 rear gears.

RB25DE AWD R34RB25DE Manual R34RB25DET Auto R33RB25DE R33RB20DET R32RB25DE AWD Auto C35 LaurelRB25DE AWD (and RWD) Auto C34 LaurelRB20DET A31 CefiroCA18DET S13CA18DE S13SR20DE S13

USDM Xterras also have 4.36 R200 diffs in the FRONT.

Mazworx sells 4.6s and 4.9 all the time.

You can order ALL of these through Nismo.

Hell, Nismo sells a 5.1 for offroad guys; but they're still R200.

Great info.

In a perfect world, I would just go the Nismo route, but its spendy. This is after all a budget build, so I cant afford to drop too much of diffs. Also, I need to plan to wreck the diff in one way or another, so the used option is more up my alley, plus it would allow me to have a spare n hand.

Check to see if the Nissan Competition ring gear sets (or mazworx for that matter) have a different alloy that lets them handle the power and shock of competition better than stock ring gears. Might help you keep from wiping out a set of gears.

Just a thought.

Im actually not that worried about the gears. The R200 gearset is pretty bulletproof. Im more worried about the case and stub shafts. I have seen a lot of guys run 400-500 whp through them with nothing but a peep. I have a feeling my 150ish wont hurt them much.
