Me and a friend did the maxima/i30 tach mod to his s13 cluster. We followed everything in this guide: i30-tach-in-s13-cluster-success-lots-of ... 42051.html

When to turn the key on and could smell a slight burning smell. Turn it off and traced it back to the ecu where I see one of the resistors seems burnt.

Its the same resistor as the one pictures here (not my picture just one I found on here)

(not my picture just one I found on here) Although his doesnt seem as melted as the one pictured, Im guessing its still no good.

I just want to know why the resistor fried? It seems I have everything wired up correctly according to the guide on nicoclub. And could another resistor be soldered in to replace the fried one? Does it affect anything else besides the tach not working? What can I do to fix it?

that's a diode not a resistor that's fried

Here is an picture of the cluster and the way we have it wired up. Does everything look right now?

Like i said I think the tach signal terminal(the one by the connector) was touching part of the cluster circuit. We trimmed some of the blue copper circuit away from the terminal now.

The tach still doesnt work Im guessing its because the resistor is fried and theres a break in the circuit there.

I did this on my s13. It worked great. I love it, only thing it Took ALOT of cutting to the cluster to make it fit right. I would never make another one again. I dont know if its my computer... or if its the website.... but your pics arent loading so I cant really be of much help without the pics.

They still work for me, but Ill try uploading them on a different site

Here is what melted on the ecu after we plugged the cluster back in and turned on the key

And heres how we have everything wired up

Your wiring looks to be correct... The only thing I noticed was the huge eye connectors your using and how close they are to cut section of the printed circuit board, Make sure none of those eye connectors or anything they are touching made of metal are making contact to any part of the printed circuit board you have cut or it will be making contact to who knows what. Especialy by that middle connector there, where the tach signal wire is. From the photo it looks as if that its touching parts of the printed circuit board you cut. Is that a washer you used to hold the tachometer assembly in the cluster housing?? looks like it may be touching as well.

Yea, the terminals are a little big. After the resistor burn we took out the cluster and had to re-trim some of the circuit that was touching. It looks close in the picture but it isnt touching the cut area. I should be able to hook up a multimeter on the tach signal and make sure there isnt 12v running though it right? Because thats why the resistor blew, correct?

Yea, thats probably why it burned... some how 12v ignition power got into the signal wire and came back down into the ecu. No, I dont believe there should be any power coming from the ecu to tach signal wire while the car is parked and ignition is turned on.

No Im saying if the tach signal terminal happens to be touching somewhere wouldnt there be 12v running through the signal from it touching the cluster circuit? Can I check to make sure there isnt any voltage running through it? Just to double check to make sure nothing else gets damaged.
