Hey guys -

Looking at lowering springs for the S13, and I see ones from AroSpeed, DropZone, Megan, Eibach, Tein S-tech, too many to choose from!

Working on a VERY limited budget here, and I primarily want them for appearance (no drifting / autocrossing).

The cheaper the better, but I don't want absolute junk.

Also, I'd love some good recommendations for shocks as well.

Suggestions?

Springs: Tein - cheap, decent quality. Shocks: KYB AGX's - cheap, effective

A better setup would be Koni Yellows with RS*R Race Springs, but that would be harder than what you want more than likely. It's also the price of an entry level coilover.

You gotta be careful with springs for the 'verts, alot of them are specifically non-convertible compatible. I believe the problem is that no company has bothered to cornerweight a convertible to prepare proper springs according the the different weigh and weight ratios of the 'verts.

And on that note, Bart runs Tein S-Techs just fine, pluse they're cheap. :)

S-Tech sounds like da winna...

AGX's are pricey, eh? Are the KYB GR-2's any good?

gr-2's and s-techs are the set-up I'm running now on my 13, the ride is decent and it's a good combo for the money. I plan doing some coilovers, so opted to go with the gr-2's over the agx's for cost purpose. I've read that the gr-2's ride is comparable to setting 2 on the agx's.

Most people will bash the GR-2's saying they suck 'cuz they're non adjustable. Plain and simple, most people on this board don't need adjustability. The GR-2's with S-Tech's will be a bit stiffer than stock but still comfortable enough for an old man's mid-life crisis. ;)

Can't use S-Techs on a 'vert... Gotta go with coilovers.

$750 for TEIN Basics? Crap... :(

You might wanna wait 'til Bart gets back from his hiatus to make your decision. He's running AGX's and S-Tech's so they work fine, it's just a matter of what's best. I've talked with him a bit about it and checked some before and after pics...it seems to ride a bit higher on the 'vert than on a traditional coupe. Odd.

Damn! Where the hell have I been? How long ago did you get the vert and you need to update your profile? I remember you were looking for one, but oh well. Got a link to some pics? Is a 5 speed swap or SR in the works?

I haven't even picked it up yet.

It'll be home next Sunday, and plans include turbo kit and keeping the automatic.

get tein basics. for the price they are way worth it, and plus you get the benefit of ride height adjustabilty. believe me, these coilovers are thje best bang for the buck.

But I don't want to adjust ride height - I want to reduce the wheel gap and be done with it.

$800 is a lot of scratch for this project...

since when? that's what i'm running. the ultimal rate is much stiffer than what the stock springs run.

S-Tech = ~3.7 kg/mmStock = 2.2 kg/mm

while the vert ways more, it's evenly distributed, and the ultimal rate of of the springs is well over an extra 1 kg/mm over the stock spring rate.

EDIT: Sorry for the lateness in reply. I've been on vacation all week, and I was able to hijack a computer at my relatives for a little while.

EDIT EDIT: I forgot to mention that all verts run the "sports" package that came on some of the S13s. They get the slightly stiffer springs and the rear anti-roll bar is slightly larger (same as any S13 with the sports package). Also, all S13s came with the slightly larger rotor and caliper from the ABS equipped S13s without having to have ABS.

Bart - So does this mean there will be LESS of a drop than advertised?

Any pics of yours from the side with the springs?

They should drop the same as any other S13. The spring dictates the level of drop, but if we take weight into account, a vert should drop more. I digress.

Before

After

The after pic was taken the day I finished installing the springs. They've settled slightly since then. From some angles (like in my sig) the car looks to ride real high, but in a true profile shot, it looks very low. All I know is I can't fit my jack under my car with it's contact point attachment. I have to go the unsafe route, and jack it on the bare metal of the jack (slick, flat portion) if I'm jacking from the sides.

ughhh damn, i wanna run kyb agx's with my stech springs on my s13 hatch but its like 370 for the agx's.... If I daily drive my car how a 17 year old would..(kinda whippin it) then do you think that gr2's would blow on me rather fast?? Someday i'll go coilovers, but for now, im on a budget and would like to know if gr2's could hold me over for say... a year or three...haha

Nah the GR2s should be fine and are great if your're on a limited budget.
