OK, what the hell, I'm starting to get numerous problems on my 240 and something tells me its the wiring, but I'm not sure. First off, one of my brake lights went off and tweaking with it got it to work. Next, the starter stopped working so I had to buy a new one, PLUS when I start it with this new one as soon as I let go of the key it makes a whirring sound (supercharger-like) and I do not have a supercharger installed, but anyways it works fine and starts the car OK. I performed a complete maintenance routine (spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, motor oil, transmission oil, oil filter, fuel filter). After 2/3 days the car started behaving strangely. As soon as I kick in the clutch pedal to let it idle it won't and it gets WILD IDLE ranging from 200-1000 RPMs and then sometimes it dies. I checked the spark plug wires but those are not the problem. I checked the rotor (distributor) timing and that is not it. This happens about 60% of the time I use it daily. For example today, I was getting the problem throughout the day, I let it rest and used it to go to McDonalds at night and it was ALL FINE I even did some quick revving for some quick de-revving (aluminum flywheel revs drop quicker) it will idle directly at 750 and would idle roughly and be fine. WHAT THE HELL!? OH! And one headlight gave out suddenly which is weird because they were working perfectly. Another detail is that very occasionally when I exit my car and touch the door to close it I get an electric shock. Weird.

Please help me out! I will try cleaning the EGR, IAC, and MAF sensor to see if I get some results. Though I still think there is something wrong with the electrical things.

The noise you are getting from the starter is what sounds like the solenoid sticking. Its common with remanufactured starters from the parts store. Be careful, letting it do it too long can chew all the teeth off the flywheel.

As for the revving, it sounds like something with the IAC.

Everything else is just typical 20 year old car problems. The bulb sockets get corroded over time and don't connect well, so clean them with a wire brush. As for the headlight, they do burn out. Usually without warning.
