i just realized that i posted this in the 240 tech forum instead of the niconauts online mechanic forum. sorry. i had too many windows open at the same time and lost track. feel free to move this if need be.

all right, i've got a 93 vert. all stock (ka24de, auto) with a 3" catback. the car has 205,000 miles on it. for the past few weeks the car has been running like it was only firing on 3 cylinders. come to find out, it wasn't firing properly on cylinder #3. i figured it was a bad injector for a few reasons: seems to be a common problem, all new plugs not long ago and newer wires not long before that. i also replaced the fuel filter and the cap and rotor this passed weekend and it didn't help. so i had some injectors from a ka altima (not sure of the year, i got them off ebay last fall) and threw them in. well, it ran fine for a trip to walmart (about 10 miles) and then wouldn't start for the return trip.

i got it to fire by giving it some throttle and then the whole way home it ran like crap again. it was running really rich, you could smell it when the car stopped and it idled poorly. also, i'm growing a soot trail up the rear bumper. so i figured the timing must have gotten screwed up when i did the cap and rotor.

i checked the timing tonight and it's dead on 20*. i figured i'd check the plugs. they had backed almost completely out on cylinders 2 and 3 and were loose on 1 and 4. i'm fairly certain i remembered to tighten them up last saturday when i was working on it, but i must not have had them torqued down enough. so i tightened them back down and tried new wires... nothing. seems to be running worse now. it's dumping a ton of fuel. from a 20 mile trip today i went from just above a half tank to just below a half tank (probably an 1/8th tank).

i'm running out of ideas here. are the injectors not compatable? that's the only thing i can think of. i damaged my old ones too much to put back in so i got another set of 91 ka24de injectors and a rail from a friend. i'm going to swap them around on monday and see if that helps at all.

any other ideas? i've spent probably 4 hours searching the forums the last few days to try to find a solution to my problem. thanks for the help.

What kind of engine does the altima have? if you want to check o2 sensor, just unplug it and see if your problem goes away.

this link may give you an idea about compatibility. injectors are about $35 bucks each if you return the old ones.

Check the injector seals and do a voltage check on your maf while your @ it. Sounds like injector seals to me, did you get new ones when you dropped the altima ones in or did you use your old ones? They could be cracked or worn out. Goodluck and keep me posted, I use to run so rich id put 93 octane in the tank and get 110leaded out the exhaust lol.

thanks for all the replies. i was out of town for the weekend, so i didn't get a chance to try anthing. the seals could be bad, i did not reuse my seals, but the ones that were on the injectors looked perfect. i shouldn't have shortcutted, but i didn't have the time. i'll order a new seal kit today. i haven't had a chance to check o2, temp, or maf. i'll try those this afternoon.
