Calling all runners!

I just finished running the 14th Annual Community Health Network Half-Marathon (13.1 mi) in Indianapolis. My unofficial time is ~1:41:05 (7:43 pace).. chip times will be posted tonight sometime.

I trained for about 8 weeks before the event... WAY undertrained, but I really wanted to run in it.

I started running about 2.5 months ago, mainly for the cardio aspect of my training, but also because I missed it. I got runners knee really bad when I first started, but now the pains are here and there.Right now I'm just in solid pain.. as 13.1 miles is the furthest I've ever gone.

Who else runs!?

I do...but not as much. I kinda got lazy and took a 7 month break

Anyways, recently i started to get back into it...but the only the problem im running into now is dealing with shin splints.

My fastest 5K back in HS was 22:50, it was a PR, last race of the season senior year. Fastest mile was 5:30, probably faster now, haven't bothered to time it. Fastest 100 meter was 9.84 seconds.

^ Wow nice! Yeah I never ran in HS or anything like that, I just got into it more as my fitness activity increased.

When I was in high school, this ethiopian dude ran the mile in less than 5 minutes. I don't remember the exact numer but it was 4 something for sure. That is so sick. Thats a qtr, 4 times, in just over a minute each.

I do a good bit of running. My average run is 4-5.5 miles. No marathons lately, and it is becoming to cold to keep at it.

Last year I bit it on some black ice while turning a corner. Talk about sucking the fun out of your run...

I would love to hook nico members up with a discount on New Balance shoes.

Email in my profile if you need anything.

Mods I know this would be considered advertising, if you feel it is against the forum rules, please delete this post. I thought it might slide because it is non-car related.

Thanks

Running sucks. I ran track for 7 years til istarted having hip flexor problems because of triple jumping, which lead to more knee problems and I need up popping 2 heads out of my spine my senior year when I could have qualified for state in at least 2 events and goto state for the 2nd time.

Even now when I run more than 1/2mi my knee starts to get a sharp pain and I have to stop, but I still, for some reason, love running.

I'm a 10-10.5 with a fairly wide foot, but I forget my exact dress shoe size.

For a 100m, you meant 10.84, right? Because 9.84s was the world record back in 1996 set by Donovan Bailey of Canada. Then Murice Green broke it in 1999 with a 9.79.Non-wind aided numbers.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_metres

My fastest and only official 5k was I think 23.10 and that's when I was racing Mt.Bike and decided to run because I liked this girl that was running in it. I whooped her too.My fastest 1 mile was in the low 6's. I don't know if I ever got in the 5's.

I'd like to run a marathon at some point in my life, but that will all depend on my training, and if my knees hold out till then.

I can't handle marathons, I barely make it through a 5K because I sprint as the race starts. I've become better about it, usually 6 minute for the first mile, then about 7 for mile 2 and 3.

I love running My fastest time last year for running a mile was 5min. 23sec. I injured my left knee in baseball that year and haven't really been doing a whole lot of running since.

I need to start running more though, since I'll be start basketball soon.

I run about three or four days a week in the summer and spring. Winter I just play basketball. When I do run it's about 5-7 miles. iPod and Bowerman series Nike makes for a nice run.

Yeah, I just got a new iPod a few days ago. With Rage Against the Machine playing, I should be able to run a 4 minute mile

I run for PT every morning but the any runs past 10mi I tend to fall off the ~8min pace our CO likes to keep.

13mi at ~ a 7:45 pace is outstanding and beyond Ranger standards.

I've been running for some time now... In fact I made my best time the other day at 20 Seconds... from the couch, to the fridge, to the pantry, and then back to the couch... I had 10 seconds to spare before the end of the commercial break too!

It's a personal best...

I can honestly say I've never owned a pair of NBs. How are they?

I have been a Nike / Reebok guy for the longest time. I then bought a pair of Asics, but they fell apart fast so I won't be buying another pair of those for a while. I am on a pair of Adidas (AdiOne) for the moment, and I like them.

I like them. Decient priced and good for my knees. Motocross and BMX crashes tore them up(knees). I used to wear Etnies and DC(flatbottom) and I had a lot of problems with my knees and pain. Now with wearing NB they are good to go. NB breathe pretty good too

I've read to replace your running shoes every (approx) 300-500 miles / 6 months!

I learned the hard way when I started running on a pair of 3 year old shoes, and my knees started hurting like a B*TCH!! New shoes fixed the problem.

A 2 year old pair of Addidas is far from "Good shape" They may still feel ok, but if you put a new pair on there would be a big difference.

All shoes break down over time, it's just the nature of the beast.

If you have never tried a pair of New Balance you are truly missing out. I'm not saying that because I own a store that sells nothing but New Balance product, I really believe they are the best.

Check out Newbalance.com or NBwebexpress.com or go to a local retailer that sells high end running shoes (not kohls, famous footwear, ....) Let me know what you are interested in by email and I will significantly beat any advertised price for NICO members.

Keep in mind that I am an "Elite" dealer and sell the high end new balance models. I can't get anything under the "600" series as they are low-tech shoes made for "Big Box" retailers.

This....actually explains a lot. When running, I have always ran into knee problems.

Im definitely gonna go ahead and buy a new pair to see that solve this problem lol.

O yeah man. It's night and day.

2 weeks into getting back into the running game, I developed runner's knee really bad (look up the symptoms and see if thats what's happening to you)

Stretching for each muscle 30+seconds, (before AND after training) plus the combination of new shoes, and starting on a good vitamin / glucosamine+chondroitin supplement really helped eliminate my knee problems.

....

Son of a b****..... Yep, that's exactly it. Wow, I wish I would have known this stuff like, 4 years ago

Im kinda surprised that I was never told to replace running shoes every 6 months.

Yeah man. Stretching and having good kicks is KEY.

ALSO- don't make the same mistake I did...Only increase your TOTAL weekly milage by 10% AT MOST.

I jumped 30% percent one week when I realized I still retained my endurance from when I last ran. Well my knees weren't ready for that, adding to the aches.

Take good care of your knees and feet. If your knees even feel remotely sore, wear a compression/support knee brace for the rest of the day, and soak your feet in epsom salt. If you injure yourself, take at least 3 days off for recovery! I'm finally to the point where I can treat myself according to even the slightest weird feeling, and that gets me back on the roads faster than anything.
