I don't run... I actually loathe it.

MTBing is my sport of choice.

Thanks man. That helps out a lot.

Just curious too...how many miles do you run and at what pace? (when you first started to train for that event)

I do a sort of a modified "Bill Clinton run"...

I book it to Wendy's instead of McD's and take the bus back. It's kind of my way of earning the food.

Mind you I was undertrained, but heres a basic breakdown.~10 miles a week at the very start to get my bearings lube'd.

Roughly 18-22 miles per week once I was in the swing of things.

Either 2.8 or 5.75 miles per session, a few times a week (until reaching ~20 miles weekly) @ anywhere from 6:45 - 8:40 minute / mile paceCardio on the elliptical, daily, at least 30 mins. Leg strength training once a week.

Two weeks before the race, 9 miles in woods / trails averaging 8:30 minutes / mile.one week before the race: 6 miles in the woods, ~ 8:00 minutes / mile.3 days off for rest before the race. BIG meal the night before... no breakfast the morning of since it started at 8:30am.

Something else that helped me...On every day that you do a long run (anything over 3 miles?).. the next day, do a short ~2 mile recovery run, before you do another long session. I started doing that and it seemed to help a lot. Also be sure that you're getting plenty of calcium in your diet.

I started running before I started kindergarten. My dad ran track in high school and got all of us involved in it. I ran my first 10K when I was 7 years old (about 6.6 miles). I was the youngest entrant to ever run that race and I slid on a pile of chat on the sidewalk and twisted my knee (which started bothering me about 20 years later and still does to this day). Oh well.....

I really should get back into it but I have grown lazy in my old age and the thought of tearing up my knee again kind of scares me, especially when it pops out on occasion, just climbing the stairs.

In response to the shoe issue, I have worn almost every running shoe at one time or another. For hard core running, Nikes have always been my favorite. For lighter impact, I like almost everything except for Skechers. New balance are fantastic if you have to be on your feet for long periods of time, Adidas are just freaking comfortable and last forever. Reeboks are over rated and over priced in my opinion. great for aerobics but not much else.

I agree that replacing your running / workout shoes is a must. If you think it won't make a difference, go to the shoe store, try on a pair of new ones, and run around the store a couple of times. Feels fantastic

I wonder...

If a man in his 60s goes to heaven and it's found out at the pearly gates that he died in a marathon, would they consider that suicide and send guy straight to hell?

I love running - but I'm only a 5k 10k kind of person...nothing super long distance.

I'm currently using 3 shoes - I have a pair of asics that I don't have the heart to replace, becuase I just love the way they feel. For a race day, I've been using the Saucony Grid Fastswitch 3's...light as a feather and they give me good response.

Recently my brother got me into these: Nike Newton's

Meant for people who are fore-foot strikers, which I am. I really like the way they run, and I might turn them into my primary shoe...

I really like the Under Armour ones too (I'm a UA Whore, everything I own is UA....), and I'll give them a whirl once my Asics die...

Fastest race 5K for me is 20:12....I don't like to run at 8 am on Thanksgiving, but I do it anyway because it's fun...

Fastest 5k off time is 17:49.

Wuss. I run while it's snowing out. Get yourself some nice Cold Gear Under Armour top and bottoms and go for a run.

Despite the weather yesterday, I had a long enough break to do some running. I ran for about 3 miles, didn't time myself or anything. It felt good to get back out there. I swear, before the year is over, I'm going to run a mile in under 5 minutes

Keep in mind that I am an "Elite" dealer and sell the high end new balance models. I can't get anything under the "600" series as they are low-tech shoes made for "Big Box" retailers.
Wow, I checked out some of those shoes and the 1011's look like they may work pretty good for me.

1011's are awesome, I wear them everyday. They are really designed for a larger frame runner who needs some motion control.

email me if you are interested, cost would be well below $100 + shipping

Congrats! I run but usually I stick to 6 miles sprints running up and down steep inclines and through a park with winding trails. I haven't tried going any further but I'd love to participate in an event and see how far I can push myself.

I ran for four years for Varsity 400m, 200m and 800m relay in High School. Then my Dad (RIP) gave me his bike and I never looked back. I do about 100miles a week just for fun. 140+ if I'm training for something. Much easier on your joints and I just do crunches after the ride to make up for the lack of core excercise associated with cycling.Runners are silly

I'm flat footed so I need good stability/motion control, but weigh 175lbs. Should I look for another shoe?

1011 would be a decent choice for you although a lighter weight alternative would be the 850 or 1225

Back in my racing days (MTB), I would run and bike. Usually I'd go out for a run, jump in the pool to cool off a bit (summer afternoons in KS are pretty warm), change clothes, fill up the water bottles and then go for a ride. I think the longest day I ever put in was about 4mi (hilly) run and 40mi (hilly) ride...that was a decade ago though.

Woohoo! I finally got around to buying a new pair of running shoes...I ended up getting a pair of Asics. Can't wait to try these out this weekend.

Edited.

What is an Adidas Asics? Both of those words are independent brands...

Anywho, anyone run a Turkey Trot on Thursday? I did...

For all curious, I was the gorilla, my brother the banana...

And for all curious, running in that thing sucked. Started out on pace to run a 19 min 5k, and then heat/sweat/not breathing slowed me down to a 22 min...but all the comments were fun!

PS - Newton's rock. Forefoot running FTW.
