Or maybe Chrysler is pushing the CVT in the Patriot/Compass too far? It's basically the same model CVT as the Rogue.

Except for it's pickup trucks/SUV's, Nissan typically does not typically offer towing packages, etc.

But isn't one of the main reasons for the Rogue's low towing capacity due to the frame? I thought this had been discussed before and presumably the CVT can handle much more.

Like I said earlier, there is no standards for tow ratings. While one mfg. may push the 'limits', another may play it safe. IMHO, I think Nissan is the latter.

Frame and suspension are only one part of the puzzle. Transmission ratios, cooling capacity, suspension design, available power, etc all play a part in the tow rating.

Well that could be and I definately wouldn't want to put excessive wear on the CVT, but since the CVT is manufactured and warrantied by the same company, JATCO, I don't think Chrysler can make the call on how far to push the limit, they'd have to provide the specs proposal and it would have to be JATCO who sets the limit for the CVT, but since Nissan decided not to add a tow package with the extra cooler and perhaps some other less "beefy" specs then they have to stick with the 1000 lbs limit. Oh well, nothing can be done now, maybe I'll trade it in for a Jeep Liberty, many of them have a 5000 pound limit with the V6, which is unusually high for a vehicle that size......just kidding, love the Rogue.
